Hey Keith!

I have both cameras, and like both. I do prefer the HRF's easy film loading and motor advance/rewind and its 75mm framelines. I prefer the ZI viewfinder and AE lock. Both excellent choices...

Doug ... you're not getting it mate! He know's already that they're both excellent choices ... what he really wants is for us to make up his mind for him! This way when he gets one ... and then a month later decides he would rather have the other ... he'll have someone to blame aside from himself! 😛

We,, if I was going to make up his MIND for him, it would be for the Ikon. The AE is about the same between them (I have both). The Ikon has the better VF by far. Used it costs about the same as the Hexar. But most of all, you can get it fixed if you need to.

If he uses his HEART, then it has to be the Hexar. It is the last of my RFs I would ever sell 🙂.

Being a new owner of a Hexar RF, I've been quite happy so far. A few quick positives...

1) Viewfinder is fine if you shoot wide, and ok with a 50. The viewfinder is especially nice if you like having a bit of room around your framelines for framing (which is why some street shooters prefer the 0.58 VF on their leicas). Its not as bright as my leica, but seems bright enough for low light shooting.

2) Motor wind has a lot of advantages - it's nice to shoot a sequence of frames without having to pause to cock the frame advance lever

3) Shutter speed of 1/4000 is VERY liberating, especially if you like shooting wide open during daylight.

It is not the ultimate camera, but if these 3 points are important to your style of shooting, you will not be disappointed. My biggest concern is that it is a dead camera - someday it will fail and not be repairable, and this might be your main reason to look elsewhere...
