Hey Xpro1 Users! I want your thoughts!

So way back when my D800 still hadn't even given me an approximation of a possible delivery date I walked into a local camera shop and laid eyes on the Xpro1. I must admit I was rather smitten, I thought it was a pretty cool feeling camera and was almost tempted to cancel my DSLR preorder and walk out with one since I could pick it up and all its released lenses for less than I paid for the D800 and one lens.

I decided to wait on that, be less of an impulsive person, and lets just say I have a D800 sitting next to me. But the Xpro1 never fully fell out of my mind and now I am wondering, do you think it can handle the work load of being my secondary camera when I am shooting an event? Swap my standard 50mm Prime on my D800 for one of the new tack sharp zoom lenses and stick the 18 or 35mm on the Xpro1's cropped sensor as a prime / candid shooter.

I'd rather not default to another DSLR even though that might be the wiser choice, and the X-Pro1's form factor appeals to me. I'd love a Leica Digital, but I fear those might be out of my price range for a couple years to come.

My secondary camera has always been a twin of my "main" camera, as that is simply the easiest way to do it. I use to carry a pair of F3 cameras, and now I usually carry a pair of Leica M cameras.

I have and use the X-Pro, and I love it very much, but I'm not sure it would make a good a secondary camera to a DSLR. I like the X-pro as a stand-alone camera, something lightweight and quick to use.

I say yes. And u may find u just might leave that D800 behind a time or two. It might open up opportunities for u that u never had before. I found that in my case. You also may find u can use jpegs instead of RAW and save u some time. I could mention other factors I am sure some will but the camera can be quite liberating.

Just ditched Canon EOS divital system after 12 years (not to mention film era) for the one reason one poster mentioned-XPro can be taken anywhere, i would not drag eos 7d with grip for a dog walk. On top of it you add the exceptional picture quality and seems like no brainer. If you do not depend on your nikon af and fps rate to make money you will not regret.
At least I don't 🙂

I ditched my 5DII and L-glass for the X-Pro 1. Best decision I could make, now I take more pictures than ever, and have more fun whilst doing so. When I shoot something that requires a different look and much higher resolution, I just bring out the 500CM.

I do precisely what you're thinking of (except I use lowly D700s).

The XP1 is great for candid shots at events. The camera operation is quite different than the D800. They focus rather differently. Auto ISO is different. The D800 is better for people who like to fire off bursts of a dozen shots at a time.

Anyway, if you are willing to learn how to adapt the XP1, it will serve you well. The 35/1.4 lens is excellent. The 18/2 is great for reportage.
