Hi,

This is my first post : ) !!!

Some time a go, a man sold me two Canon lenses with a Leica M2.
The lenses are a 35 mm. f/1.5 with serial number 13XX8, and
a 50 mm. f/1.4 with serial number 120XX4 How hard are the
optics of these two lenses, compared to their Leica counterparts?

Thank you, kind regards,

igmotita : ) !!!

They are maybe two of the best lens that Canon made. 35/1.5 is soft wide open. But it's powerful in low light and the color is beautiful.

50/1.4 is quite close to an early summilux quality.

Congratulations!

Hi,

Thank you for your message : ) !!!

I imagine that by f/2.8 or f/4 the
image will be already hard enough.

Is the optical, and image quality, of this
35 mm. f/1.5 from Canon also as good as
the image from a lens from Leica or
Zeiss?

50/1.4 is quite close to an early summilux quality.
I see that Leica made three summiluxes. So, I imagine
this one fares like the first modell, the summilux I.

Thank you again, kind regards,

Hi,

Thank you for your message : ) !!!

So, you mean, the glass on the 35 mm.,
f/1.5, is as good as the glass of Leica or
Zeiss, and that is what makes it a
rarity?

Kind regards

For pure technical image quality, I believe that comparable Leica lenses are better than the canon lenses, but the canon lenses come very close at a much lesser cost.

Just my opinion, ymmv

Yes. Both are technically better than contemporary Leica lenses (1958/59).

IMO, the Canon 35/1.5 is the best all around RF 35mm lens that Canon made. This was f5.6 or so:

Wide open, it doesn't have the veiling flare that the pre-asph Summilux has.

The Canon 50/1.4 is quite a special lens. A Xenotar design, the only RF 50/1.4 with only 6 elements that I know. Sharp in the center at infinity even wide open. And nice rendering, too.

Note that not many people here have actually used the 35/1.5 ....

Hi,

Thank you for your messages and the photo : ) !!!

The lens is quite sharp! Looking at that "cut out"
from the picture, one could easy imagine two
things: (For example,) one, to enlarge any picture
taken with that lens easily to 20" x 24"; and two,
tone it in B&W with any photo program, and one
has a picture that is worth a gift to someone!

So, cool : ) !!! I have never enlarged any larger
than 8" x 10", and that was in the past, when I
was shooting B&W in the past. Every now and
then I'll enlarge color pictures to 5" x 7", or 6"x8".
Nowadays all my pictures are postcard sized!

Have a nice day, kind regards,

igmotita : ) !!1
