I just got my first roll of HP5 developed from my Kiev III. I understand now. I think I am on the edge of a really slippery slope here.

I see that you're Canadian. You have a large support group up your way; They'll support you buying more and more FSU gear and cheer all the while! :D

Welcome to the world of old rangefinders and such.

You're a goner. :D But it's a he** of a ride and the company here is first rate! Welcome aboard!

The Jupiter 9 and Jupiter 11 are amazing lenses as well. :D Easier to find good ones for the Kiev mount as well. Oh, and all that really sweet original Zeiss glass works just wonderfully on a Kiev body too...

Welcome to the club!

git on yer a** and slide down that slippery slope! we're all waiting down here fer ya!

don't forget to grab a J-12, a J-3, a J-9...oh hell, get all them damn J's...on your way down. oh, and the Kiev II/IIa/IIIa and Kiev 4/4a/4m/4am, too. and while you're at it, hunt down a Contax II and III and some Sonnars. you also might wanna taste some of them Feds and Zorkis.

what are you waiting for??

Be afraid, be very afraid. You've opened the door to a different space-time continuum and great things lie ahead. May I recommend a Fed 2 with Industar 26 and a Zorki 6 with Jupiter 8 to accompany the Kiev on your photographic adventure. Its funny how these old Russians take hold of one, really spooky. I own some of the best modern cameras (film and digital) but still prefer the fun of using these old timers.
Welcome and enjoy

Hi !!

My name is also Bill and I appear to be in the same boat (and the same harbour in Toronto ).

I am happy to hear that you like your Kiev. The first roll I shot with mine ( Kiev 4a) really impressed me and I have since aquired a Zorki 4 and a black J8 for my Bessa R.

Enjoy your new toy and remember to use the famous "Contax Hold". It makes focusing much easier.

Best regards,

Bill K. :D :D

Welcome Tovarisch!

Now you will be spending hours on ebay and google, sneaking off to flea markets and antique shops, looking for Kiev cassettes, takeup spools for Feds and tripod adaptors for your Zorki. You will be dreaming of finding a mint J-9 that no one has taken apart and put back together improperly, bonus if it has the viewfinder with it.

It really gets bad when you start collecting the Black and the Silver versions of every lens.

When you hear yourself say: "Honey, I swear, this is the last one..." don't say we did not tell you so.

FSU camera addiction is just a myth. I could give up any of my 20 Zorkis and 15 FEDs and two 4 Kievs anytime I want -- Except for the FED NKVD which is pretty rare and the mint Zorki 1B with Ffash sync and the Zorki 3m, and the 1B with strap lugs and the FED 3A sent to me by Irina and, Oh yeah, the Zorki 3C that is a great picture taker, and the two Kiev 4As sent to me by Tom and. . . .addiction is just a myth, I tell ya. ANd I almost forgot my Red Z5 that doesn't work but still looks cool that I'll probably send to Oleg, and. . .

I have absolutely nothing to add to the thread as I have yet to try a Kiev or Zorki or Fed, but, I just thought I would say that this quote here has got to be one of the best lines I've ever read regarding GAS :D

Cheers

Check alex-photo on ebay. I think he still has a cheap cassette (under metal /plastic spool) to sell. I recommend the kieves with cassettes. The original type is getting very expensive.

I'm very additive to shutter sound at 1/50s generated by early kiev 3a, and 4a (early 60's). The shutter ribbon made in 80's (4am, 4m) is more resistant to mositure intrusion.

Uncle Bill - welcome fellow Torontonian entranced by FSU cameras. I picked up a Zorki-4 a couple of months back and both the price and quality make them tempting indeed. I've had promising results with mine.
