most of the photos were made 4X5 or roll film Speed Graphic cameras. Think about lugging that around in a combat zone. Also in use, I think were rangefinders, such as the Leica screwmounts of the time. But since those were Axis made (Germany), probably not many available....
Frank Capa used a rangefinder on D Day.

Joe Rosenthall shot a lot of the goings on with a Graflex 4x5, including the famous flag raising photo. many of those pictures you linked to seem to be 4x5's.
