Hard to understand, really. Like, do they actually believe it when they say it? Or do they know they're bullsh*tting, but they're trying to pull off some Jedi mind trick?

I think you're right, Derek. It's the "big lie" strategy. Enlist an army of talking head revisionists to keep repeating it, and some people will be fooled. It's the same tactic employed by Holocaust Deniers.

Of course, the people who believe it are the ones who want to believe.
 
I'm not sure what bothers me more, the persistence of such lies by people like Giuliani or the failure of a so-called "journalist" like Stephanopoulus to even blink an eye to challenge such mendacity.

I'm not the least bit surprised by Rudy's statement; it's what he and is ilk do for living -- spread mistruths. I wish I were surprised about a interviewer let it stand unchallenged.

Of course, a lot of the American public are stupid or lazy enough to fall for this chicanery. Our general unwillingness (present company excepted, of course) to educate ourselves about the world around us has doomed us to suffer with ineptness and dishonesty among our leaders (ie, we get the kind of government we deserve).

What's also disappointing to me is that having gained the reins of power, some of the folks I voted for to eliminate some of this crap have instead fallen into it's alluring trap themselves. I still think that Obama is a better vessel than his predecessors, but I do cringe everytime he or someone in his administration reverts to the form of the Cheney-Bush cabal. Full-disclosure: 30+ years ago I was a friend and high school classmate of Rahm Emmanuel. I am disappointed that he didn't use some of his legendary toughness to help Obama do an LBJ on the health care legislation.

The moral of the story is that if bad people tell a lie often enough and consistently enough it will eventually begin to resemble in the minds of the public something like the truth. Pity us for not paying more attention to rooting this out.
 
What else do you expect. It was 8 years after 911 that Janet Napolitano , Homeland Security Secretary, was still insisting that the 911 terrorists came into the USA through Canada. She got backing for this belief from none other than John McCain.

More lies that seems to become true. If they can only have them repeated often enough:

1)
Lee Harvey Oswald killed John F. Kennedy.

2)
Christer Petterson killed Olof Palme.

3)
That Al Qaida was behind the antrax attacks in 2001.

Obvious absurdities, very easily to refute, yet some choose to sincerely believe drek like this. ("But 9/11 doesn't count." Yeah, right!)

Some 'wingers seem to be frustrated to the point of delusion! They are so worked up! Otherwise rational humans sincerely believe that there are Death Panels, that Obama was born in Kenya or Indonesia, and that he is a practitioner of Islam. If you even attempt to point out these obvious falsehoods, the conversation quickly melts down!

And then there are dorks like Limbaugh and Robertson (and their robot followers) who, in my not so humble opinion, have been total anal orifices in response to the situation in Haiti! 🙁

I heard a cut of a radio program in which Rudy Giuliani answered calls during one of his election campaigns. One caller argued that 'the lower crime rate' in NY also was a result of changes of demographics (more older people = less crime; the same tendency is typical in a range of European nations too) and could not only be a result of Giuliani's law and order policy as mayor of NY. Which caller tried to document with an university study.

Instead of argumenting with the guy in a civilized way, Giuliani, started shouting, like some African despot when confronted with his acts, calling the caller names and constantly interrupting him until he hang up (or was cut off). After which, Rudy Giuliani gave us radio listeners a lecture of 'how many idiots there are around....'

Nor is Europe the perfect place regarding freedom or speech, democracy - or political talent. Ref. Berlusconi and Tony Blair. But Rudy Giuliani would be chanceless on the European political scene. How could he become two times mayor of New York, is beond me.

Another lie they try to stuff down our throats is that 'just everybody is to blame for the financial crisis'. By this, the real guilty go free.
