on weekends I roam my neighbourhood (in Brooklyn NY) for stoop sales (aka yard sales, garage sales) looking for old camera gear. I have bought a few duds this way, but today I came across a really nice set. Nikkormat FTn with Nikkor 55mm/f1.2, Nikkor Micro 55mm/f3.5 and Nikkor 28mm/f3.5 (and a ridiculous Vivitar 85-205 zoom), the whole lot was $75. AND it comes guilt free (for me) as the seller knew what he was doing, his quote when I asked the price was "I am selling a couple of thousand dollars worth of lenses for $75, but I need it to move as I am packing up to move overseas". And it all looks like it's in EX+ condition (in KEH rating).
I already have the fantastic Nikkor 35mm/f1.4 so this will make a great kit.

Great deal. I thought I found a deal on a Nikkormat FTn and 24 2.8 for $60.

anyone know why the 55mm focal length has pretty much disappeared? Or why it came to be in the first place?

The low contrast of the 55 1.2 makes it work well for low light, high contrast stuff. This is another of those lenses that you couldn't give away in the 1980's, but seems to have achieved cult status these days.
Great find!
