I think that the lc-a would be a better choice if you can find one "cheaper" than what the Lomographic society is asking for this.
As mentionned in this thread the lc-a is not really a toy camera, I use it mostly with b/w films now and I really enjoy the result.
I looked at the holga 135 but didn't felt interested because it doesn't look really like "a small holga". The particular rendition of the holga comes from its plastic lens that hardly covers the 6x6 format, there is strong vignetting and blur on corners. Transposed to 24x36, the lens is "too good", they has to put a filter or something like that behind the lense to get vignetting ! The rendition is not the same as the original holga.
You should also consider that the fixed exposition is a strong limitation, you can live with it with a 12 shots roll on the holga 120, but with a 36 shots roll it can be more annoying.

I bought a used one for £50 at a camera shop in London that had several 2nd hand cameras (Photocraft, in Hampstead).
Woo hoo! My local camera store.
(sorry, I'll be moving on now
Now to the subject: just buy an XA-2; it's a properly good camera, for peanuts, without paying for the extortionate LOMO brand markup. I have an LCA+, and I really don't get the obsession with the camera. It's just a fully auto camera with a so-so lense.
Now if you were interested in 120, the Holga really is a wonderful piece of kit (if horrid) - why does 120 scare you? You can get it processed and scanned as easily as 35mm, and the results really are gorgeous (especially if you shot the Holga at 6x6 without a mask)...

I've shot with a Holga 120 (for a year as my only camera), an LCA and an XA.
The Holga is great for what it is. What eventually drove me away was that the light you can use it in is very limited. I went from there to a Rolleicord. Still have both.
The LCA has I think a better lens than the XA actually. Less prone to flare and I really like the 32mm focal length. It sits right between 28 and 35 and is very usable. Wish I didn't sell mine. The color rendition is really nice. Not worth $250 but I would grab one for half that. Wish they made a 32mm Leica mount Lomo lens.
The XA I think has the best design of any pocket camera. I took a ton of shots with it because it was always with me. What eventually made me sell it was the ugly flare and not great lens quality. I also had an XA 4 which was nice with the 28mm lens. I like that you open it and it auto sets the focus to around 6 feet. The XA 2 does this also. Also the quietest camera ever.
Be interested to see the results with the 35mm holga.
I feel like cheap digital cameras are the new LCA or Holga but I havent' found one that produces really interesting photos in that LCA or Holga way yet.
