Holy grail of Nikon RF for cheap - 2.1cm at $3K

What would the typical price be?

Stuff I've been selling recently has edged up in price, but there are always the exceptions, both high and low.

the auction was mis-titled.

"Nikon Rangefinder" was not in the title. Instead it only said "Nippon Kogaku" That mistake cost the seller at least $2,000, if not more. Normally experienced collectors would catch that mistake, but some buyer got lucky today.

Nippon Kogaku Nikkor-O 2.1cm 1:4

This is the title above. Including "Nikon rangefinder" in the title may have helped, but even with this title, anyone who knows how to search Ebay should have found the auction. Vick did, and I bet NIKON KIU did :p

If I am searching for a 2.1cm Nikkor, I use Nikkor 1cm in the search box. Searching Nikon Rangefinder yields a bunch of digital Rangefinder devices meant for hunters and golfers...

This was a real bargain for sure, normal price is $6k or more.

There has been a copy for sale on a site I frequent here in Japan for over 600,000 yen for months.

Let's see...how about pick up the mint LTM version instead, and have enough left over for a few other lenses and bodies... :)

Phew! That's CHEAP? For a 50-year-old lens that fits on a camera which is, to be generous, idiosyncratic? All right, it's a superb lens (I had one in F mount) but it's no better than a 50/4.5 Biogon (in fact, I prefer the Biogon) and the price is half-way to the current 21 Summilux which is 3 stops faster AND fits on a decent modern camera (and some decent old ones too).

(Ducks and awaits firestorm from Nikon owners. OF COURSE it's all personal preference but when I see some people complain about Leica prices, and then see others call this cheap, I begin to wonder.)

But it's a wonderful idiosyncratic camera or two. For me the big thing is that it moves the directions as my Nikon SLR system.

A Jesuitical distinction, but point taken!

Besides, if it makes you happy and you can afford it, what's the problem?

Persinally I can think of several better ways to spend $3000 on a lens, but they'd probably draw even more flak because I like Leica lenses!

I've seen the F-Mount version converted to S-mount and RF coupled. Interesting job. My F-Mount version was $300 with the rear cap that the finder slides into, front cap, finder, and original case. Even have the Nikon Pre-Viewer to go with it, allows TTL viewing. About 7000 of the F-Mount made. To me, this lens showed Nikon pulled out of the RF business too quickly. Turn the Nikon F into a scale focus camera with a kludge pre-viewer to view the actual scene through the lens rather than making more in S-Mount.

No, I'm not forgetting.

I'm just pointing out that this is a collectors' lens par exellence. To borrow Fred's irony, forget about using it, unless you want a wildly overpriced lens on a near-irreparable (and wildly overpriced) camera with a narrow lens throat; a combination which few sane people would use for important shots (at least without a backup).

Gets me back to my quest for a Nikon F to S adapter........

I agree that stuff should not paralyze you. That's one of the reasons I own more than just one camera. My GRD I will pull out in the rain under a poncho, my S3-2000 will not see a rain drop. But then I'm not earning money with either currently, that would change things.

The scarcity of the S-mount 21f4 probably justifies the price. As a user I am more comfortable with the F-mount and the VC F-S adapter. Cost me less than 10%, including the adapter and finder of a S-mount one. Of course, IF a S-mount would show up at a reasonable price for a user - I could be tempted. I saw one at Lemon in Tokyo in March for about $4000 - but I resisted it!
It is a nice looking piece though.
