I was doing some search online and stumbled onto this neat trick.
It's in Russian but pictures are self-explanatory.

Yesterday I tried it, made first prototype (for one window only, using fridge stickers) and it does work!
Here is my example. I scanned the 6X4.5 with standard holder (on the right) and with the magnetic strip holder (left). As you can see- there is an improvement.

Also,
There are some concerns about magnets close to scanner but the guy there says that he has not noticed any adverse effect for the last year and a half he was using this contraption.

That is really nice. I bought a Betterscan holder which is fine. But I tried something like this first, I didn't think of the magnets. Keeping the negative flat is important. One thing that I did was to get a piece of plastic to align the negative straight so the cropped-scanned image would be straight. But you are probably using the side of scanner to keep everything lined up.
