So, what's with the Home Page now jumping out to run off the right side of the screen? It's bad enough having to slide the screen back and forth when folks post their huge photos, I certainly don't want to have to do it all the time now.

What happens to me is . . . on my netbook, if I am sloppy when pressing the ALT key I'll scrape the touchpad (not intentionally) and the window zooms in or out. Took me forever to understand what was causing the zooming.
Could that be it ??

Naw, I'm running a regular desktop and CRT. I haven't changed anything on this end. But I've noticed the creep in of new technology taking over, such as new screen standards and such, on a lot of Web pages lately. Makes it a lot harder to run an older machine because all the Page designers think everyone is using the latest tablet or phone.

Page designers, me included, look at the stats related to what screen resolution was used when viewing our websites. The vast majority and I mean vast majority are using hi-res screens. Sorry it just doesn't make sense to design webpages for systems that are used by so few visitors. Having said that many webpages are designed to be responsive with a minimum width of 900px. That's the way I design mine for the most part. However some designs don't allow for that so they get fixed at a higher res.

Time to bite the bullet and upgrade. I hope at least you are using Firefox.

Well, if you consider 1200 wide hi-res, maybe. Or if you merely look at the soon to be extinct desktop computer. Average screen sizes have actually been decreasing for the last two or three years, due to the decreasing relevance of desktop computers. Few notebooks or tablets exceed 1440 wide, and at smartphone level 1200 high (at a measly 640 wide) still is dominant, thanks to the rather underwhelming standards set by the iphone 5 display.

Depending on the site mobile is still a rather small contributor to page views. Increasing yes but I have a sneaking suspicion people will tire of eye strain and go back to larger displays driven by their mobile devices.

Having said that most designers have a totally separate design and site for mobile devices so things render the way the marketing team wants it to.

I'm a Luddite at heart, so I'm still running my WINXP desktop (Chrome for the browser) until I can get the new laptop with separate monitor set up the way I like it. I don't care for the new 8.1 Windows, or the way the laptop works (the trackpad is way too sensitive, and I can't get it dialed down enough), and most definitely hate the screen on the laptop. Maybe by the time WIN9 comes out things will improve.

The screen jumping off the right side seems to have stopped, and it was only on the Home Page that it happened, which leads me to think someone was tinkering with the site earlier today. But I still wish the moderators would enforce the picture display size limit, instead of making it user optional.

Go Farlymac, and I though I was the only one using XP/Chrome. Retirement does not support a laptop fix so my Hi-speed-Hi-resolution puter is replaced with a free "mature" Dell. Thankful for it as it fell squarely within my budget. Just enjoy my g-mail & RFF!

I hear ya, Red. I ran my third computer for 13 years, and this one is now going on 12, creeping along with a DSL line.

I don't disdain the new technology, I just can't afford to be replacing it all every two years just to keep up. Especially when it is working fine. Nothing personal, Eric, but it seems to me whenever there is an advance in computer architecture, there is a race by the Web Page designers to see who can max out the technology so they'll have something to cry about, and force another advance.

As another aside, this also has occurred on Flickr after they did some tweaking to the site. Only there it's every page. It's got to be an Aspect Ratio thing to fit better on phones, as that's what they were aiming at, increasing usage of their mobile app.
