As traffic and posts increased, the site started to slow down. Membership has grown about 30% since January.
About a month ago I removed the random gallery from the home page because that was the most server intensive home page extra. Speed improved, but some people really liked the random gallery -- I was one of them.
Today I added the random gallery back while removing the members online list from the home page, as that was also very server intensive. I hoped without the memership online list, the random gallery would not slow the site too much. No such luck. The site slowed to a crawl.
Now the random gallery and the members online are removed from the home page, and we have a relatively fast site again.

With this setup the site is working much faster.
