Hood 12504 on Summicron 35 IV

I've a Summicron 35mm Ver. IV, using with the designated rectiangular hood 12524. I love the vent hoods more, aesthetically, and want to get a 12504 hood for it. Not sure if the idea works? Any experience or view from you guys that I could refer to?

The hood certainly fits both the Summicron and the 'lux. They are not all that easy to get hold of. I have an extremely tatty one that has some damage to both the hood part and also the buttons to remove it from the lens but still pretty much works. I would part with it for a small sum as I have finally found a better one for an affordable price. There is no intrusion into the rangefinder image but it is not as efficient at shading the lens either.

THank you, you just saved me 60$ 😀. I see many ppl here recommended heavystar's hoods, so it is trustworthy.

All original hoods are more expensive than generic ones. A hood is a hood, not rocket science to make a piece of plastic. Leica plastic is more expensive than others but doesn't mean it works better. However, it is more pretty and more unique.

Shouldn't the Leica ones be more effective in terms of shading? And I think some of the Leica hoods are made of metal.

BTW, I cannot agree more that they look better.

If you believe that Leica hoods are 5 times as effective as the Heavystar ones, go ahead and buy them. Some Leica hoods are indeed made from metal, such as the 12504 and 12585, but so are the Heavystar hoods I linked to too.

I have been lucky to get original hoods with the lenses I've bought second hand so I use them. Should I loose one, I'd probably buy generic ones instead. There are probably small differences in the height, diameter, angle of the outer shader etc between the original and generic ones but does it matter in reality? Is it worth 5x the price to be "sure"?

I should have said "plastic or rubber or metal". And no, shading is entirely dependent on the hood being matched to the lens. Also, technically a hood with a cutout would be less effective than a hood without a cutout.

Orig Nikon/Canon hoods are also several times more expensive than generic ones.

Why pick on Leica?

Alright, I'll happily pick on any brand charging hilarious amounts of money for simple things like hoods. I find it ridiculous to charge $75 for a simple molded plastic hood no matter the brand.

If your Summicron is the version designed for Series VII filters fitting into the 12504 hood be aware there is no filter thread for the Heavystar hood to attach with as it screws into the E39 thread on the lenses so equipped, as were most of the Summicrons and the early Summiluxes
