I want a hood for my 50mm OM lens. I get flare now and again.

The size is 49mm, would Leica hoods work? I like vented, and want a cap for it.

Lots of options out there. I like generic metal hoods, you can find generic caps that fit too. Lose it, no big deal. Most Leica hoods for RF would be too small, 39mm, R hoods too big, I think, also pricey. Vented? Why? The vents are for seeing into the obscured corner of the RF window. What are you using this zuiko on?

Look for the original OM hood on Ebay. Its a clamp on ribber hood that works for the 50mm f1.4, 50mm f1.8, and 35mm f2.8 lenses. A lot of guys on there sell them at vastly inflated prices, but I have bought all mine (I have 3 or 4 of them) by careful bidding at less than $10 each. A much better solution than any aftermarket hood.

You can pick up a collapsible rubber hood locally (like at The Dark Room) for a couple bucks. It isn't sexy, but it works and you get to keep your $$ local. Just sayin...

Get the rubber original one for the 50mm, as suggested it works on other lenses too and needn't be expensive. I paid £2 I think for mine. In some ways its better than the rigid metal one (which does exist but isn't cheap as they aren't as common) as if you slip on ice you don't dent the hood (as I did to my 28mm f/3.5's this winter just gone.)

On the other hand the metal ones don't tend to slip off if you stupidly grab the camera by the lens hood sending the camera crashing down 3-4ft onto concrete...

Yeah the metal ones aren't cheap. I just received one today. never seen one come up on eBay before this one. was $50. might seem extreme but the laws of supply and demand prevails. I have another which i bought with a lens but I could not resist buying this for my other OM.

I will confirm they grip nicely but quite prone to scratching or dents so you tend to take great care when using them.

Hi,

The original OM ones soon go out of shape and then seem to set in that shape. So I use one of the fold back rubber ones from Hama (?).

Looking at the one on the Leica lens I think I'll spend a few pennies on it. It looks as deep as the OM one.

Thanks for showing us: aren't they cheap on the US version of ebay?

Regards, David
