When I got my IIIf, it came with a Summicron & hood. The 'cron was a very early one that is better off with Brian Sweeney than with me. I've now got a nice Summitar instead. Since the hood fit the Summitar as well (it too has the same sized ring with a groove at the right place.) I kept it.
So I got wondering what the official name was - Leica always has had some funny names for their little accessory bits. There wasn't any such letters on it so I had to do some snooping. After awhile it turns up that it's called a IROOA hood for the Summicron 5cm & Summitar 3.5cm and goes for an easy $100 in semi-decent shape.
I realize I've been spoiled with the various other cameras I've used but that just seems humorous to me. I'm not really interested in selling it as the Summitar really does need a hood much of the time, but it just reminds me of how alien the world of collectibles are to me. I remember paying $20 for a NOS Canon FD hood for my 50/1.4 and pitching the mint condition box. To some I suppose that would seem foolish, but I've got enough of that kind of stuff around here. OTOH that hood was on my lens until it was sold with the lens recently, so why worry?
Just a bit of a rant on the topic because I just feel like ranting a bit. Hopefully if you're still reading at this point, I haven't annoyed you too much... 🙂
