Hood options for Summar?

Hello there,

Long time listener, first time caller. Thought I'd tap into the collective experience here and ask what options are available for an aftermarket or improvised hood for my Summar lens. I've used it for several years without one. The results are very pleasing indoors. Outside though it can flare wildly. I'm not interested in shelling out more than I paid for the lens to get the proper Leitz hood. I'm not above using a toilet paper roll if it worked. Looking for an option between the two extremes.

I've poked around the local camera store's junk drawer with no luck either.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I have a Hoya vented 34mm screw-in shade to use on my Summar. (Came with the lens when I bought it recently.)

Welcome to the RFF. I use a Kodak series 6 adapter of the 1 7/16 inch dia. on my Summar.
you can mount any series 6 hood on the adapter plus any series 6 filters if you wish also.

I found the proper Summar hood for about $20- on ebay I think. Don't think I even had any other competition for it.

That was only a couple of months ago.

$20 for an original hood is an excellent deal. Nice score.
I'll look into the other suggestions - thanks for the advice.

The Summar is a great little lens-especially for portraits. Surprisingly sharp at times - even with a front element that looks like it was cleaned with a Brillo pad!

I use a ser VI push on or the FICUS 50/90/135. Even in the 50mm position it is perhaps 25mm deep and close to the lens diameter so it gives very good protection.

The barndoor ones are perhaps 5% better at a hugh expense in size.

The barndoor shades are for the Summitar lens. For that lens, the vented Summicron clip on hood works well without all the bulk of the barndoor shade.

Update: My local camera shop (which happens to be a Leica dealer) solved my problem. They had a couple of boxes of new old stock Ednalite step-up rings in the back room. #616 along with an Enteco vented hood did the trick. Looks good. Total cost: $5.00. Will be trying it out on my M2 later today.
