Hoods for AGFA Isolette and Record

Well, I am the proud papa of an Isolette III with 75/3.5 Solinar and Record III with 105/4.5 Solinar who need hoods.

I am thinking that 32mm push on for the Isolette and 37mm for the Record are correct, but looking at the lenses the area to push on is pretty narrow. I just want to be sure before I put down some cash.... is there a special type of push on hood I should look for?

I have the same Isolette III with the same lens, and now the same question as you. I gather the shutters can vary as well, mine is a Synchro-Compur MXV.

The Solinar 75/3.5 that can be found on an Agfa Super Isolette uses 32mm push-on filters.

The Solinar 75/3.5 that can be found on an Agfa Isolette II or III uses 30mm push-on (or slip-in) filters. The same filters that can be put on an Apotar from the same camera.

As for the Solinar on the Record, I cannot say for sure.

This source, however, http://www.ph.utexas.edu/~yue/misc/AnscAgfa.html introduces an element of uncertainty. It appears that the filter/hood size may vary between earlier and reformulated versions of the Solinar 75/3.5 used on the Isolette III:

For the Mark II Series a reformulated f/3.5, 75mm Solinar became the deluxe lens for both the second generation Isollettes. The 75mm Solinar has a maximum aperture which is approximately one stop faster than its predecessor. Due to its slightly reduced focal length this lens seems to be a tad sharper than the earlier 85mm Solinar at close range. The 75mm Solinar also uses a redesigned focus ring that now accepts a slightly larger 32mm slip-on, A-32 filter size. The reformulated 75mm Solinars are usually set within either a Prontor SVS or Synchro-Compur MXV shutter.

Using my desk ruler, it looks like mine would accept a 30mm push on. Is there any other way to distinguish between the versions of the lens, original or reformulated?

My Isolette III with the f3.5/75 Solinar and Synchro-Compur MX takes 30mm push on accessory. My camera looks like the one shown here:

Agfa sold black plastic shades of that size that are relatively easy to find (at least here in Europe), but they are mostly for the 85mm Isolette and the 50mm lens on the Solinette and will vignette a tiny bit on the 75.

Because of the vignetting, I still haven't found the perfect lens hood for my Isolette. I think one of the wider generic chrome/metal lens hood of the period might work.

As for the Record II and III, 37mm push on is correct. Again, there are Agfa branded black plastic hoods of that size, but they are not as common as their smaller siblings for the Isolette. Then, there are vintage 37mm metal lens shades from other manufactureres (Voigtländer 310/37, beautiful, rare and very expensive!) or B&W for example, that will also work. Best place to find such items are local camera fairs and flea markets IMO! But of course there is always Ebay...

I guess he says that it is reformulated because previously there was a Solinar 85/4.5 lens (don't know if it was an option together with the 75/3.5, but I wouldn't be surprised). I also own a couple of these, and they are 30mm also. In fact, all of the front-element-focussing Isolettes I have come across accept 30mm accessories.

I have checked an Isolette III with 75/3.5 Solinar on Synchro-Compur MX and it takes 30mm filters. I will check the others with 75/3.5 Solinar tomorrow, see if I have an MXV to be absolutely sure.

Good morning, I think.

So, I found my handy dandy little measuring tool,

Isolette measures out to 34mm and Record up around 43mm.

Why oh why is it me with the rouge sizes? I will post a couple photos tonight.

Ok, after my first cup of coffee I measured again.... 30mm and 37mm.

Now the list is, No operating heavy equipment and no use of a micrometer before coffee.

For the record.

There are four variants of Solinar, as found on Agfas Isolette.

The first version is tipically uncoated, although there are coated units identified by a red dot. It is the pre-war and immediate post-war type. 8.5cm and f/4.5

Next the post-war, multicoated 85/4.5 with the same rim style than the Agnars and Apotars. This is the most common type.

Next versions, I am not sure of the order. Both are multicoated 75/3.5 lenses, and based on the serial numbers starting with "T", the new style rim was first, and the "old style" was just present in few units by the end of production. Worth mention that in this case, the new "old style" has the name in capital letters, similar to the Color-Apotar font and style from the Isolette L.

Thanks to jnoir for the comparison pics. Like rover's Isolette, mine is also the third type in jnoir's list, so 30mm is definitely correct. I was mistaken when I linked to a pic of the second type in my previous post.

Mine may show up this week, so barring a wintery weekend I should be able to get a roll through mine as an experiment.

I am abroad until Friday and unable to check, but if I recall correctly I use both an original Agfa hood, and an ancient Cenei hood. I have never had any issue with vignetting, but they came with the cameras, and may be shorter than the ones intended for the 85mm lens.

That's an interesting point, I'll have to check when I'm back, to compare.
