Hoods for: Industar 22 rigid; J3; Industar 61 L/D; and J12?

From my research these lens take the following diameter hoods:

1. Industar 22 Rigid--33.0mm

2. J3--40.5mm

3. J12--40.5mm

4. Industar 61 L/D--40.5mm (corrected)

Does anyone know where you can get METAL hoods for these?

The Industar 61 L/D takes a 40.5mm as well. Do a seach on *bay. That's where I got my hoods. The common sellers for the 40.5mm are from "americaneagle" and "heavystar". Both are good to buy from. As for the Industar 22 rigid........I have no idea. Good luck.

Metal lens hoods have been swept out of common usage by the conical rubber ones, which make more sense on SLRs, but there ae some possibilities and I recall some previous correspondance that you you should find if you trawl back through this forum.

Other than that, I guess the Leitz FISON is the obvious choice for the I-22.

40.5mm used to be a common size with German f2.8 lenses and there may be stuff on eBay. The Zeiss hood is well made but badly designed. Don't be tempted to buy one, it is sure to obstruct the finder badly, even on a FED-2.

Onother option is to get an adapter from 40.5 to a larger size. This is what I did to put my 46mm stuff on my Olympus digital. The local store had it in stock.

As for the 49.5mm, I suggest you check that it really is that. The chances of getting a third party hood that size would be slim indeed whereas if it is 49mm there should be something around. I thought the I-61 was 40.5mm.

Pentax made some nice solid hoods but they may have been plastic. They were flattened and thus would not obstruct the view too much, but I don't know what sizes they were and may have been for wide angle lenses.

If you have other cameras, with hoods and filters, providing you dont mind the/any finder blockage a stepping ring is the cheapest solution.

There are people who make vented metal hoods for 40.5mm, and there are second hand metal 40.5 hoods for sale. the vented hoods minimise finder blockage and look really smart.

If you visit a conventional photo shop in a big city they should have a drawer full of 2nd hand hoods and new stepping rings and that may be the cheapest method.

Add another good word for Heavystar's hoods. I have boughta few over the last year or so and been very happy with them. If you get one for the J-12, you'll want the "40.5mm WIDE". The other lenses(except the rigid I-22) could share the same hood.

That 33mm is a tough(IMpossible?) size to find! You might be better off looking for the appropriate sized Series push-on adaptor/hood--but I don't know what that size will be, it may be 1.25 inch to Series V?

The 33mm seems to be a FSU (USSR) specific and you can get filters i.e. FSU filters, but I've not seen a hood though. One of the Ru suppliers must have hoods.

The J12 does not need a hood unless you use a fillter, if you plan on using filters it is simplest to use a step ring to

- 46mm and use contax G filters and hoods, or
- 48mm, or
- 49 mm Oly OM-x filters and hoods etc.

The hood will need to be a wide angle hood even in

- 46mm say a Contax G CC-1
- 49mm say a 35mm Oly hood

You can still use a 40.5mm filter under the ring to minimise the filters carried. I use a step ring and each of these options.

I don't mean to hijack this thread. Thanks for posting this and I look forward to more info.

I got a rubber hood for J-3. It is a Bower 40.5mm. My J-3 was fitted with a yellow filter and the rubber hood when I shot a roll with it. There's vignetting on all corners. 🙁

The J3 is more sensitive to hoods than the J8 series, if you try either of the step ring and wide angle hoods recommended above this should not be a problem, I use both (either) on my Ge & Ru 1.5.

The 1.5 lens may have more inherent vignetting that the f2, if you are using chrome.

If you make a paper triangle with half the angle at the diagnoal or liik through the rear frame of the camera you should see any exposure, from the hood and filter combinations.

Thanks for the site plug 😀 The papier-mache hoods works well with I-22 and I-50, as well as J-9 lenses. The conical shape isn't even necessary. A straight, short tube (much like the spool found in tissue paper rolls) about 5-7 cm long will work with the J-9.

The J-3 is quite hard to 'hood'. As Noel said, its wide aperture complicates the issue. A more tapered hood is necessary. I too got vignettes when using apertures f:5,6 or smaller. The commercially available hoods don't taper as much as the J-3 would need. There's not too many wide aperture lenses found with small filter diameters.
