Who here uses a hood on their Elmar 3.5 collapsible lens? I have not been able to find a hood (push-on or otherwise) that will fit on 36mm (lens cap size) Elmar or my Fed collapsible.

Would love to get some advice on where to get something that would fit...... as the Fed especially is an un-coated example and would really benefit from a decent hood.

Thanks!!

Yes, the FISON hood is right. I found a Walz hood that is a FISON clone and it works just fine. Might be cheaper to go with the Walz.

Thanks guys.....I'll try ebay again....last time had no luck. Unfortunately Phila has zero shops for film guys and precious little for any kind of pro photography.

Thanks again!

I always use shades but in the case of the 3.5 Elmar all of the hood offerings totally defeat the attractiveness of using the lens -- they triple the bulk, look awful, and if the darn thing is going to flare, just let because it adds to the vintage flavor of the photos. The nicest things about the 3.5 Elmars is that they make a LTM pocketable and they look really cool. And a flarey, old-style photo is hard to duplicate with your perfect modern gear, so I'd go with the flow in this case.

You can always use your hand or other objects for creative shading too. Practice looking at the front of the lens, if you can see your hand, move it back. Remember about how far away it was and you're good to go, just like Ansel Adams did with his 8x10 lenses (well he may have used a hat or a dark slide ;-)

Good points Frank!! I actually have used both the Fed and Elmar for years sans hood but recently got a barn door shade for mu Summitar and it got me thinking. And, for that old timey look I have a nice blue Leica screw (to tighten mount) filter that I use with my un-coated Fed...always gives a nice vintage look.

Thanks again!!

I use the FISON hood for my 50/3.5 Elmar. It does make it even more of a pain to change the aperture (you have to take the hood off unless you have very small, nimble fingers). OTOH, it does protect the lens, and doesn't add that much to the length when the lens is collapsed. YMMV.

I'd just go on looking on ebay for a "FISON" or "FIKUS"and remember that a lot of conventional 36mm slip-on hoods are about. It's just a matter of looking and luck as they are always turning up. And don't stop looking once you've found one as there may be another auction closing a little later that everyone's ignored.

BTW, the black plastic conical FSU one is a bit so-so but they do a nice rectangular one in 42mm. And do make sure you remember only to use it on lenses that don't rotate...

Regards, David

No, there's a small, clip-in accessory that allows you to change the aperture by twisting the whole hood (also works with filters, of course). I'm too lazy to look it up but I'm sure someone else will chip in with the Leitz-catalogue Chinese for it. I have one somewhere but never use either it or FISON CHROM.

Cheers,

Roger -- I know such a thing exists, but I've never seen one Having to buy an accessory gizmo to make it possible to change aperture w/out removing the hood kinda underscores the ergonomic challenge of this lens. I usually operate in a sort of primitive aperture priority mode when using the hood. 🙂

Canon also made RF lenses with 36mm external front diameters, and their hoods mostly have interchange adapter rings. A Canon hood for the 50/3.5 collapsible, 50/2.8, 50/2 collapsible or 50/1.9 collapsible (that last is a rectangular shade) might be had for less money than a Leitz.

I agree about the bulk. I have the Elmar hood for my Industar. Frankly, I bought it for completeness. I have used it, but it's not practical given that the main attraction of the lens is the compact-ability. Perhaps if I had filters on it.... Somehow it complicates things too much.

I picked-up a Corfield ( British ) copy of the Leitz VALOO last year... it was cheaper than the Leitz hood. Both allow adjusment of the aperture tab by turning a knurled ring on the front of the hood, which has an index mark and aperture scale to correspond to the lens.

Prior to that I occasionally used my A-36 slip-on to E-39 threaded filter adapter, and into that screwed an E-39 round hood for the 90 / 135 Elmar / Hektor, purchased from Heavystar on e-bay... this rig worked, but it made for a pain when I needed to adjust the aperture.

Lastly, I acquired the FIKUS extensible lens shade, and that is what I now use on all my A-36 lenses... I rarely shoot my Elmar (it has the early "11 o'clock" focus lock and interferes with the slow-speed knob on my III's ), but when I do, I grab the Corfield (VALOO) shade.
