Hi All,

Last month I started a thread, regarding having my V2 Rigid Summicron recoated , it had pretty severe coating marks, literally hundreds of tiny scrapes in the original coating. I spoke several times to John Van Stelton @ Focal Point in Colorado, and in the end, I decided to send him the Summicron. Also had several large format lenses that needed some work, so I sent it all in together (the front cell from a 300mm Schneider Convertible Symmar, that was badlly hazed, and a 100mm Convertible Schneider Symmar, with a severely deformed front ring, also in need of a cleaning inside.

Well it's all unpacked, and it all looks like -new-. My Goodness, the Summicron is nearly new-looking, the glass is now impeccible! He says the rubbing compound he uses to remove the old coating really can't harm the glass, and he has done hundreds and hundreds of Summicrons without any problems whatsoever. What a great resource he is, I don't know of anybody else doing this type of optical work.

BTW he charged me $250 to CLA and clean/collimate the Summicron, as well as recoat the front, which seems very reasonable to me, considering what is involved. And it really does look and feel like new :D So it's off to shoot some film tonight, with M2 and the Summicron.

Several years ago John cleaned a bit of fungus from my Alpa lens. He does wonderful work and is a real gentleman to deal with. Highly recommended. Joe

Here goes my testimonial:

Some three years ago I sent him a lens that I purchased at an extraordinarly nice price because it had what the seller called "a slight separation".

I couldn't see a thing separating. The lens looked very normal to me, but I sent it to John, who let me know when the lens arrived and prepared me for a 3-week wait.

However, the following morning I had a note from him: if I sent him payment right away (via USPS), and he received it within the week, he'd rush my lens job and send it back within ten days. Reason? He was getting ready to go on vacation, and wanted to leave without any backlog. Of course, I sent him a check and the lens arrived some five or seven days later. Total: $250 plust $10 for shipping it back.

The man is admirable, and very patient to boot! :)

EDIT: BTW, it was my Elmarit 28mm lens.
