I just received a KMZ Horizont in the mail today that I got from a fellow RFFer. Loaded it and ran across the street to test shoot my most reliable test subject. That's Stu, if he isn't in that plastic chair in his yard, then he is upstairs napping. Note: my finger in the frame on the lower right, damn this thing shoots wide. I am really liking this new addition to my FSU pile.

I was speaking with Memphis (Blake) on the phone this evening and he was telling me about shooting with his over the weekend. From the 12th floor of a famous Memphis hotel. Waiting for him to process his film. I forgot to ask if his Horizont is the modern one or the original. Blake, if you're reading this, which is it?

Mine is the old metal one, a 1970 I think? If the serial number dates run the same as the rangefinders, it starts with 70xxxx. Anyone know if that's how you can put a date on a Horizont? I'd be interested in hearing about Memphis', too. And seeing some pics as well!

Pardon my ignorance, but what does KMZ mean? I have been looking, fearfully, at Horizons for a year or more and can't decide which, if any, to buy. It's about the only pano camera I can afford right now.

KMZ is the manufacturer in the old FSU. See here: http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/KMZ

Dog gone it, that's mine (or was mine). Blake talked me out of it by waving $$$ in my face. Not sure if it's old ot new but it is not the newest style but it is plastic. Decent lens and a lot of fun for the price. It made me move up to a 6x18 Horseman back for my 4x5 which is a whole lot more money. The Horizant is a lot handier for hauling around. I loved it for city shoot, esp. for verticals.I was speaking with Memphis (Blake) on the phone this evening and he was telling me about shooting with his over the weekend. Stu has the right idea. A cool drink with a lid to keep the bugs out, and a shady spot in the yard. Other than the finger in the frame, that is a well exposed and non-distorted shot. You'll have lots of fun with that one Matt.

Got out and put a couple rolls of neopan 400 through it today. I love this machine.

Great exposures and no banding! How are you scanning your negatives? I just shot a roll of color print film and will soon get it developed. Also have a FT-2 but it seems problematic with the 2 special film cassettes and no film rewind.

You've got a real feel for the format. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next on film!

Hey thanks, I think I got a good copy of this camera for sure, it seems to be light tight and the speeds are right on. I'm scanning with a canon 8800f with Vuescan. I filed out the film carrier with a knife to get the black borders or sprocket holes.
Please post some of your color shots in this thread. I think I'll try a roll of color today. So far I've only shot B&W in the Horizont.
Forgive my ignorance but what is an FT-2?

Thank you Ben. I have a couple rolls on deck for scanning and I will post here if there are any good ones to share. Best, Matt.

The FT-2 is the early Soviet made panoramic camera with a Fed 50mm lens

check out this site http://poncar.de/
Jaroslav had many great opportunities to develop his panoramic photos
I also noticed on ebay there is a Canadian who has played around with the Horizont cameras and understands how to refurbish them
I have 2 examples- 1 works better than the other and I am considering sending the other off to be repaired.

did you see the Pentti Sammallahti exhibit when it was in Helsinki?
I heard it was fantastic. Too bad his books are so expensive!
do you tackle the seals around the lens?
