For those who don't know, w/nw stands for "words/no words."

Judging by Taffer's recent w/nw threads, "eye contact" and "shooting into the sun," it may be a good idea to make this a regular. Be easier to for someone to browse through the different w/nw topics.

If, months later, someone adds a new photo, the thread will bump up, as with any thread. But, in contrast to other forums' similar threads, ours will in effect be always active.

Any thoughts?

I thought "w/nw" meant "with no words" as it was to express a common theme using images only. But if we can think of a different title, that would be better. It reminds me of Photo.net and the associations are not positive.

You may be correct. I was only referring to the one at the Leica forum of pnet, but that's the general idea.

Whatever w/nw means, I think it is a good idea. I like to see how people intrepret themes photographically.

It's a great idea. It's been f-- err, rendered causic, at PNet; there's always got to be somebody peeing in the pool trying to bash this or the other. Hopefully, if implemented here, it can be kept to mostly "pictures" (i.e. "no words").

This is some wish item. There would need to be some sort of plug-in available to accomplish it beyond what we've already been able to do with attachments --or somebody with lots of spare time to program it in to the forum.

Looking at this thread, I get the idea Jorge already gave us a W/NW forum. :)

I THINK I understand what this is, but the "words/no words" thing is confusing me, as is "with no words." Are words allowed, or aren't they? If not, it should be "without words," or "W/O Words," or "W/O W." These would be topic-based image only threads, right? If that's the case, I vote yes!

Ray, it's simple really.

You post a photo. Either with some text (W) or without text (NW).
The commenters can comment with text, photo + text or just with a photo.

I prefer the photo and photo, leaving out the text all together. But that's just me. Sometimes a photo just begs to be commented on with a little story, some reminiscence or good-hearted advice.

Got it! Thanks. I voted 'yes,' btw.

:)

What about "gallery." Then just add the theme of the gallery - "At the beach gallery" or "Dark mood gallery." Seems simple.

If I recall correctly, the concept started out on pnet as No Words. Someone would start a theme -- say 'fire hydrants' and the idea was that the only appropriate reply was your own photo of fire hydrants. Words were not encouraged -- images were supposed to do the talking. No Words was eventually abbreviated to N/W and NW.

People couldn't keep their fingers off the keyboard though so it eventually morphed into Words/No Words or W/NW making words optional in the replies.

The problem with w/nw is that people sometimes start themes so specialized they're the only ones who can participate. Or you'd get 5-10 threads started at the same time so it began to skew the discussion threads.

Because of this, W/NW got banned on most of the discussion forums and moved into a forum of its own (where it basically died). The exception, as always on pnet, is the Leica forum. They're still allowed there, but are supposed to be categorized into their own area so as not to confuse the flow of discussion threads.

I'm neutral about them (there wasn't a vote for this).

Ray, thanks for putting that idea into a thread :) (I was sleeping while you did it, hehe)

First, I must admit I submitted those two threads with w/nw in a clear reminiscence of the Leica / S&D pnet ones, which (I admit) I like. I've seen (and see) some very good work there, and in many cases from people also visiting here.

As to allowing words or not... well, again I like the w/nw as it simply gives both options, leaving it to each one, maybe Jorge could implement a routine to disable the keyboard when entering that tread :D

I have no preference at all as for the titles (wo, nw, wnw, photo time!, images, snapshots, etc) just introduced that header field to clearly identify the thread as an 'images' one to avoid confusions with a normal one, any identifier will do.

Also, I'm not sure if these in the long term could create some storage problem when the number of uploaded images grows ? I wouldn't mind having an expiration date to them (ie, if there are no new posts in 30 days the whole thread is gone, that would get rid of too specific threads sort of automatically), Jorge will know this better.

Cheers,

Oscar
