Could anyone tell me how badly Elmarit-M 28 type 3 with hood is blocking VF in M4-P and in M8?
I only found one note, but didn't understand. According to another note type 3 is not good for internal 28 frames, but only for external VF (which I don't like to use).

The Elmarit 28f3.5 vIII will block the finder of a stock M4P finder and particularly so on 0.58 finders of the various M6's. It ids not too bad - you do get used to it. Years ago my "regular" hood got mangled a bit and I got a hood for the version IV which has "cut out" that improves the view.

I'm sure you already know the v3 28/2.8 has a 49mm filter size (kind of big) with slip-on type hood. There are 2 versions of the hood: one with a cut-out and one without. The v4 elmarit 28/2.8 that Tom A. mentioned has a 46mm filter size and also has a slip on hood (with cut out). I don't think the v4 hood will fit on a v3 lens.

I don't remember how bad the finder blockage is for the v3 as I only placed one on my M2 briefly (tried a friend's lens at a dinner party), but I remember it definitely blocked part of the M2 finder (of course has no 28mm framelines). I currently have the v4 Elmarit and it intrudes (the hood actually) on the 28mm framelines of the M9 (0.68X mag.) as well as the M2 (0.72X), but not badly. The cutout helps. I would imagine the v3 with its larger diameter, and longer lens length, and bigger hood (possibly without a cutout) intrudes substantially into the M4P view. Not sure about the M8, but likely.

Having said that. People seem to *really* like the results from the v3 Elmarit. Quite a bit.

I used the V3 on my M2 for some time with guessing, blockage was okish - the balance on the camera was nice. I got an auxiliary finder cos I fu¢kd the portrait orientation shots up, for landscape it was ok without frame lines.
I finally sold it cos there are better lenses out there, I'd get a Konica, a V4 or ASPH Elmarit or even a CV 28/3.5 over the V3 Elmarit!
There is no blockage with the CV28/3.5 😉

Here you go, Ko.Fe.:

Note that not all hoods have the cut out. Great lens (and Canadian 🙂 ).

Thanks to all of you!!!
Thank you, Roland! You just made me double happy on this Friday! Looks OK to me, even if no cut out in the hood.

Cheers! Ko.

As you can see above it does block a bit but honestly I wasn't too bothered by it when I had mine. I loved the rendering style of that lens and I've got a whole bunch of great images from it. I only let it go because I wanted to get a 28 Summicron, but otherwise I'd have happily kept it for years.

Kostja, you made me look at my old shots with the 28 V3 and now I feel all nostalgic.

Yep, I've checked some of your's and went on search from others.

Gary Gumanow prints from negs taken with this lens are discovery of the year to me...
Reminded me Winogrand through street work. I wonder if he was able to use it or he was with type 2. Winogrand used external VF, so internal VF blockage wasn't big deal for him.

I follow Gary Gumanow for years now. He is a great photographer! I totally adore his SWC shots.

As for the other Garry, I believe he used a canon 28/2.8 but I can be wrong

I did print stuff from my trip to Rome taken with that lens. They came out nice but I actually only printed (wet prints) what I already liked as scan. And I also haven't printed big.

Another question for Elmarit-M pre-ASPH users. How stiff is the focus?
I readed twice recently what typ III Elmarit-M 28 has focus slightly stiff...
I only know how it feels on Leitz made old lenses and my modern Summarit-M 35 focus ring is silk smooth and light.

Funny you'd ask about focus. My Elmarit pre-asph has a very subtle focus characteristic. It focuses smooth and nice if I make long sweeping focus movements, but when I try to "narrow down" my focus and move the tab back and forth small amounts, it gets a little "grabby".

I emailed Don Goldberg (DAG) about this. He told me it was well known issue with the grease Leica used during the period when my lens was made. This would be the late v.4 pre-asph era (46mm filter dia.) lenses. Its annoying, but doesn't completely ruin my positive experience with this lens.

The v3 lens I used previously had great focus feel. Reminded me of my Biogon 35/2 in that it was almost too undampened and fast. I kind of like it that way though.

Thank you!

"...too undampened and fast..." sounds like my Summarit-M 35 and I like it this way as well!

And if v3 focus is stiff (firm) it means the lens is for re-lube, I guess.

Mine is a little stiff. No problem whatsoever, somehow got used to it.
