How can I tell what version of lens I have?

And there's an excellent book by Brian Bower "The Leica Lens Book", David & Charles, ISBN 0 7153 0817 3. You can often find it cheap on ebay.

Just in case you need another source: 🙂

Erwin Puts' Leica Lens Compendium can be downloaded for free at his website.

Is there a website or something??

I am looking for info on the 35mm and 90mm versions of the M lenses.

I use "Indentifying Leica Lenses," by Ghester Sartorius, Amphoto Books, $24.95 new...For example, the 35mm/f2 Summicron comes in four versions-1958-1969, 1969-1979, and 1979-1997; the 35mm/f1.4 Summilux aspherical comes in two versions, 1961-1995 and 1990-1994...Among the ways to tell is by Serial Number and weight...regards, bob

I looked around on his site, but didn't see a link to this information. Can you post a link, or give details on where it is?? I know many of the comments on the gentleman, but he is usually very readable, and certainly opinionated!

Harry,

The link to download the lens compendium (text version, no images) is on THIS page.

This is another of his free books on M Lenses

I have a 90 TE Thin Serial #3452*** made in Germany. i am curious about an additional engraved & paint filled "05" that appears on the focusing ring. When the focus is at infinity the marking is roughly aligned with the red dot.

Any ideas what this engraving means?

It is Leica's way of telling you that the actual real focal length of your lens is 90.5mm.

Thanks Paul. I'd seen it before, but always just ovelooked it. For some reason it just caught my eye when I was using it this afternoon. As is often said...you learn something new everyday.

Thanks for the great links. I looked on the page, but had no idea where the book itself was placed. Already put into the library.
