How Could This Happen to Annie Leibovitz?

True... but if you have that kind of money... and hire financial managers, the only thing you have to do is listen to them. It seems like almost everyone close to her tried to curb her spending to no avail.

If my toilet breaks... I hire a plumber because I know crap about crappers. If the plumber says "Don't use in it while I'm working on it"... and I don't listen to him...whose fault is it when the sh*t hits the fan?
usually true but a lot of people listened to Madoff.

The fascinating aspect is that she ISN'T Madoff - she's a photographer, who's been treated incredibly well by her clients. And actually, having dealt with her people, sadly not her, they were quite nice, for New Yorkers. That's what makes the story of her accumulating this huge debt so fascinating. If she were a monster it would be boring.

What is poignant about this story is the way human beings can rise to the very highest income stream for their profession... and then still delude themselves that they're the next level of income stream up. Because that was her problem, wasn't it? The universal one.

Funnily enough, in the whole story, the main clue to her personality is what she's like as a neighbour. I know New Yorkers are not always neighbourly, but making your house fall down is a bit much...

"Our last studio was in an old double garage in Chelsea. It was vast, with high ceilings. It was the studio of my dreams, but I realized that I didn’t need it. My best pictures are taken on location. Anyway, the studio got too big. We had too much equipment. Things were getting out of hand. Having a studio is a little like having a fancy car. It doesn’t help you take better pictures. Now I have an office in a town house in the West Village."

Even Annie Leibowitz had GAS.

How did this happen to Annie?

Art major.... ;^)

Seriously...
1. Handling lots of money well is very hard and that is why many wealthy indivduals hire their money managment. Most ultra wealthy do nothing BUT manage their money because every government wants to tax the hell out of them and at the same time the wealthy are trying to keep every penny they can.
2. If you want to handle the amount of money Annie was cash flowing, you better be highly organized, disciplined, and have utter control over the "get the shot at any cost" emotion.
3. Most art majors do not take money management courses or business finance courses. She should have. Because she actually "made it," financially and artistically.
I am an admirerer of many of her images and always knew she must have been surrounded by talented assitants.

but making your house fall down is a bit much...

Yes ... Not to get to philosophical (OK, Zen) delusion IS the universal problem, and not just about income. This isn't about money, it's about one's belief about the self, about dualism, about awareness. When it is unchecked one's "house" falls down. Big boom.

Before Getty laid me off, there was an announcement within the company that they were going to represent her archive. I'm wondering what is happening with that now...

this could happen to anyone .
the rich the famous --- it stands out /
artists in general are not the best financial planners .
still her photographs defined an era and all that happened .

how many moments that you and i have captured will be remembered thus .

With the right attitude and advice she could get out of this hole she's dug and jumped into...hopefully she'll learn something from all this too...Then pick herself up, dust herself off and start shooting again...
I like her simple stuff like Meryl Streep pulling her face and Whoopi in the tub of milk...
Annie...less is more...go back to when you were having fun...(if ever there was a time)

I feel a lot more for the people I know that have lost their jobs than this over paid pretentious celeberity photographer. Boo Hoo what happened to all my millions. Give me a break.
