How did Mikael Jansson light these photos...

I was thinking that he and the model were both moving together and used a 2nd curtain flash to get the background blur, but keep her fairly in focus. But I'm not so sure....I'm curious what you experts have to say!

Oh yeah, it does look like 2nd curtain sync, either "normal" or short telephoto lens, and voila. Sometimes you can achieve a sense of some movement (not the side- or "circular"-ways) by zooming in/out slightly during a reasonably-long exposure.

Light either on or above the camera, slow shutter, rear/2nd/slow curtain sync. Flash duration is fast, and there wasn't much light on the model before the flash went off.

Cool, thanks for the replies. I'm going to try this. Usually when I shoot with my flash, I just experiment with the flash settings in program mode and neglect the shutter speed.

Yup, looks like second curtain sync, though with a high iso setting and possibly panning a bit too?

I hope he gave her a sandwich after the shoot: she looks like she needs one.

looks like a dim above camera flash slightly to the left or right and some shots a curtain sync with a shutter probably 1/15- 1/2 the B&W look like available streetlight.

I am glad not to be the only one that was more struck by the anorectic character of the pictures than by the photo technique...

Yep, I don't recall seeing this thread before. But I am sure I would if I had. I hope she is still alive.

FWIW, for those who have older cameras like I do, just set the shutter for a speed that gives you the effect you want, probably 1/15 to 1/2 sec, and although your flash will fire on the first curtain (X-synch) being completely open, you will still have time to get your blur. That's how it used to be done.
