How did you learn to develop?

I have film driers now, but back in the day I used those things you store clothes in out of season in the closet. Kind of a hanging garment bag, but bigger. You'll see dust more when printing than when you look at the negs. Just get started. Stop worrying so much!

Got a taste of it in secondary school, re-learned it in University by doing some research online. Really doesn't take much room, I store all my equipment on and underneath a small side table.

High school chemistry teacher taught me and my buddy so that we could handle photography for the yearbook and newspaper. I suspect that they don't do that anymore.

I was surprised at how easy it was to get back into it this year. Anyone who can follow a cookbook can develop black and white. Cooking and developing well is the fun challenge.

[Thanks Mr. Pleis.]

Anyone else care to comment on how dust free an environment need be to dry film?

This is the last thing holding me back...and I know I've got analysis paralysis at this point. Just looking for for practical advice on how sterile of an area I need.

Thanks again, to everyone here for the encouragement. Off to see what I can buy on the cheap (measuring cups etc) and then order the reel and tank from that big photo store in NYC

Everything I needed I learned here and from Ilford's. Just do it, you will look back and be glad you did.

Honestly, it really does not matter near as much as it used to.

I have a can of compressed air that you can get at any office supply store, I just give the negatives a blast before I scan them, and after that, it's the clone tool in photoshop.

Pretty simple really.

as one of those big shoe makers says, just to it ya'll ( at least in Texas anyway)

Dad taught me developing and printing in the late 60's when he was into shooting astronomy photos using his telescopen using a darkroom he built in the basement. About to start doing my own again once I buy the basic supplies this week.
