I hate to think! My guess, though, is that it (a) lubricates the tight screw as it goes in, and that when it dries, it may have a very slight 'Loctite' effect. Certainly it's a bugger ti unscrew.

Yeah, Just like a dab of liquid soap makes for a good lube and dries up to add a bit of holding power.
