How do you choose?

First off, full disclosure, this is my daughter, I am totally biased and prejudiced. How could the fruit of my loins look anything other than fabulous?

But I am stumped at choosing between these two very similar photos, with only a subtle difference in expression : one an incipient smile, the other the beginning of a quiver of the bottom lip. Which one?

Yep, first one for me as well. A bit more greys and the mouth is more symetrical. Silly reasons but I think that what is what makes the difference for me. If you wouldn't give the choice I wouldn't think anybody would care about those details.

Symmetrical, natural?

The first photo -- ordinary.
The second photo -- extraordinary.

Extraordinary lives in the small things.

After coming back and looking at them again I've changed my mind. Although it would be difficult to take anything but a beautiful photo of your daughter, I think I like the second one better.

I am with photomoof on this one.
The first one is "nice", you at it for 5 sec and you got everything.
The second one has a sense of question in her expression, a slight "hint of Mona Lisa", something not fully explained.

Essentially the question is what purpose does the shot have?
A print for your daughter? Which one does she like best?

I prefer the first one...most likely every time you show the second one you'll have to explain the bottom lip thing going on...
Or you can do what others have said...show them side by side...
I have something similar with our daughter when she was about three...both pictures look identical but in the second shot there's a hint of a smile in her eyes and mouth...I mounted both pictures in a single frame...
unless this is a surprise gift I would ask her which one she likes...

Judgment falls both ways. Wonderful!

The first one would be nice for arranging a marriage, or getting a job.

The second one catches the precursor of something that isn't there yet. A question maybe. A syllable probably. Could be anything. A potentiality.

I think I must agree with those that chose the second one. The first one has a sweet, uncomplicated look, brut the second one has just that touch of vulnerability that makes you want to hear what she has to say. I think.

Cheers!

The second one asks more questions. I prefer it, but like you've said, it depends on the intended purpose. The first is more straightforward.

I choose #1, she seems more engaged and challenging.

But it's a close call, both are beautiful portraits.

Lips shift on second one. Crappy and lousy removal of the spot as well.
Top dis-balanced with bottom. Top needs to be cropped out.
Remove spot properly on first one.

There's more to admire in the second one IMHO, agreeing with some comments above. The lighting seems slightly different due to lowering her chin a bit... this is the one!

I'll admit the spot. Bloody nail in the wall. and the difference in processing. Pulled up the shadows a bit more in the first one.
Are you sure about the cropping? To my idiotic and fatherly indulgent eye, her eye seems to be in the right spot : vertical middle, a bit above horizontal. If I cropped to 4 by 5, I'd crop both top and bottom.

cheers
