How do you refer to your camera?

My Land Rover sometimes gets called "the old girl", but not that often.

I have a subject/object relationship with my cameras and they're all referred to as "it".
 
I'm with Roger here.. I generally go for descriptives... I'll usually say "the Leica" though, instead of "M3"... because it's the only Leica I've got!
(not so w/ contax or pentax, (or 5x7 cameras either actually...) then I need to be a little more specific ;))

emma the M 8 , 'cos M 8 isn't comfortable to say .. all the others by '' It '' etc .
 
I haven't assigned a gender to any of my gear...
I do see some as "Workhorses" and others as "Fun" or "B&W" cameras...
The "Fun/B&W" ones are mostly used for things "I" want to shoot...shots where if they come out, they come out , if they don't work just right I can go back and try it again...you know the "No Pressure" stuff...
If I have to get the shot or there's no "Do-Overs" then the "Workhorses" are called in...
And then there are the times when they cross the lines...I can be flexible...

I love this question because I really have THE answer.
A camera might be male or female by following a pure linguistic approach, but this is the wrong one. A camera is a definitely FEMALE thing (if ever a thing may be "female")
Follow me in this "sexy" comparison (hoping not be banned for this)
A camera, like a woman, becomes "pregnant" of an image through the lens (male part, whose has also the shape, more or less) which attaches to "her" (camera) hole and the light flows through it, impressing the sensor or the film
Then the camera again like a woman, processes the raw image and after a very short time, (9 months in a woman) "gives to birth" what we really see printed or on screen.
Then again like a (beautiful) woman, a nice camera is always the one choosing the adequate lens for her... But here I stop... I'm sure you got the concept...

Just to let you know, in Italian "camera" (which in our language would literally mean "room / bedroom" (and, to go further, I suspect it has some kind of spanish origin since "cama" in spanish is bed, so "bed room")) is a female word (english camera = italian "Fotocamera" or "macchina fotografica")
Despite (well before I had ever thought of this) I have always called my F6 or D200 or D700 with "female" declination, I think we really have to use the "function / process" viewpoint instead of the linguistic / cultural one.

The name comes from the "camera obscurer" which of course was a lightless room it's self and the lens a single hole in one covered window with the live image being displayed upside down on the opposite wall. so yes the linguistic origins make sense.
 
yes I see the "camera obscura", used with first pinhole methods. However here we are adopting the western (latin, to be precise) conception of the whole thing. French have for example a male translation "appareil de photo" as I guess Germans ("DER Fotoapparat",male, but they have also "die Kamera") and other languages might refer with a different "sex" to it.
 
You never give names to cute little baby animals or birds that you'll be killing and eating down the road. If getting a shot means risking a dented top plate or a scratched up base plate, then so be it. I'm going to go for the shot. Cameras are just tools.
 
my zeiss ikon = 'the mighty z'
my fuji gw670 = 'the oversized novelty clown camera'

when referring to them with pronouns they both happen to be gender neutral.
