i think far too much about stuff like this...
i am very curious as to how photographers keep their gear at the ready.
sometimes i think it's best to keep separate kits in separate bags...so i can pick up and go.
other times i think it's better to have all my gear stuffed into one much bigger bag and then pick and choose what gear i transfer to a smaller bag...
what do you do?

Yes, somehow it seems that there should be a better way.....but there isn't.
Perhaps a photography butler? A camera/wine cellar?

I'd show you a picture of my desk, but my wife would disown me then.
Most is in a little storage cabinet that used to be a stereo cabinet. My backpack is next to the couch but the cameras are sitting on the desk/cab. She hates the mess but I know where everything is so it doesn't bother me.
Now, if I could just figure out where I filed all the photo's...

I know where you are coming from....and feel your pain. Except I do not know where everything is. Several times I've been tearing up my office looking for cameras I could not find and can't remember selling.

I store them in plastic totes under the beds. And always remember to vacuum bedrooms weekly so the wife doesn't find them.

Kind of a hybrid system. I have a barristers cabinet and store cameras and lenses in it. I have two bags with gear in them on the ready. The ready kits are my main gear. An X-E3 and an IR converted X100 in a Domke F5X and the Z7 and lenses in a F6. That's this week, subject to change as boredom sets in.......

Inside packing cubes in an IKEA Kallax shelving unit (two per cubby). The less-used stuff is in a Pelican case.

I have a big wooden wardrobe cabinet I inherited from my late father which he used to store his camera equipment. It has shelves and drawers and keeps the dust out. I keep some gear I'm using regularly in a few small day-bags, so I can grab a kit and head out.

I select which camera and lens I want to use, put it into a bag along with any accessories, then leave the bag where I can conveniently grab it when ready.
On any given week, I use just one camera and, typically, just one lens, so this keeps baggage to a minimum. When I'm out making photos, I'm usually just carrying the camera plus lens on a strap - I leave the bag in the car where it can't be seen.

I built floor-to-ceiling shelves in my office. Five tiers plus the top, 16 feet long and 8 feet high. It used to be kinda organized with lenses, cameras, accessories, parts, some negative storage, and other stuff but it's gotten kind of a mess. Anyway, it holds everything though.

I have two cabinets full with it. Once I'll shrink it to one shelf, I could feel normal.

I have used boxes and cabinets for the gear I seldom or never use. But cameras I would intend to use would be in camera bags. I say would intend to use because I can't carry a canvas bag which probably weighs 35 pounds any more. My back won't allow it. Even walking without a camera is difficult at this point.

Most often used stuff is in a bag or pack. Little used stuff is in Halliburton/Pelican cases. Nothing is out in the open except for tripods, light stands, etc.

Everything in a dedicated dry cabinet, front caps in large drawer. I am not a professional photographer so I don't have a single bag for equipment. I put the camera plus one or two lenses that I want to use into the regular bag together with other stuff. If I am going to use a camera/lens combination over an extended period of time I simply leave it on the table.
