The Apollo 8 photograph showing the earth rising above the lunar horizon was taken 45 years ago. I just found this fascinating NASA video about how that iconic shot was taken, analysed using recent Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter data to figure out the exact timing and orientation of the Apollo 8 spacecraft. The video shows the sequence of events synchronized with the original voice recordings from aboard Apollo 8, where the astronauts are struggling to find a back loaded with color film for their Hasselblad ...

Thought you might enjoy this.

Brilliant! Thanks for posting. One of the greatest photos ever and all it took was a bit of luck and some amateur photographers 😉 Notice my avatar 🙂

The lack of a level horizon totally ruined the image for me. They'll need to rotate the canvas, which will lead to cropping, to get it level, and I don't believe in cropping.
Further, they are missing shadow detail in the lower edge of the earth. We all know the earth is round, but it doesn't look round since they didn't expose for the shadows. I read on the internets that this is what you do with color film. If they scan it, the information may be on the negative, and they can use a shadows slider to make the earth look round, as it should be.

Just sloppy.

Ain't that the truth. To be fair, the amateur who took this picture, tried to avoid positioning his main object bang on the middle, possibly in subconscious recognition of the divine rules of composition. Unfortunately, s/he failed miserably to place the moon to the middle right portion of the frame, something which could lift the composition to the high heavens of Art.

Yes, sloppy. And vedy, vedy bad. Must be retaken some time when they send some monkey round the moon again.

I agree, they should go and re-shoot this picture now based on your notes.

Monkey with a Hasselblad is not a monkey anymore 😉

If anything is to be learned from this, it's that color rolls should be easily accessible. 🙂 Thanks for sharing the great video.
