OK, girls and boys,

this is a serious poll, so no silly answers this time!

I have a colleague (American, bless her) who's knowledge of geography turned out to be somewhat shocking (to the rest of us). She didn't know whether the Amazon flowed into the Pacific or the Atlantic. I don't think she even knew whether Washington D.C. was north or south of New York.

So, for US American's only please, (and no cheating, i.e. VOTE first THEN LOOK at the rsults)...

IS FRANCE TO THE WEST OR TO THE EAST OF GERMANY?

The majority of France is to the West of Germany, though certain areas near the South-East corner are physically more East than parts of Northern Germany.

The more correct answer might be that France is to the southwest of Germany.

I do agree that it's sad that many Statesiders have such a poor knowledge of geography, even US geography. :(

I had a co-worker (we're talking a college graduate here) who had Baltimore and Boston confused, and many here in the midwest can't identify "all those little states in the east" on a map. :(

Just watch that "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader" show for many examples of this ...

Not to mention Corsica and various territories all over the world, both east and west of Germany. :p Anyone know where to find Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana or Réunion?

are canuckleheads allowed to answer this quiz or do you consider us too brilliant for this to be a challenge? hehe, the geography question that i find stumps a lot of people is whether the nile river flows north or south? the physics question that stumps a lot of people is whether, given a steady rain and an equal distance walking or running, one will get wetter by running or walking?

That would confuse too many and would require the ability to answer two answers as was pointed out earlier.

I believe that Americans are almost as "uneducated" on some of the parts of our own country.

All of them are near, on, or by the Carribean. French Guiana is on the North East shore of the South American mainland.

right?

My cousins history book that she used in school two years ago for 7th grade had great maps. You could see East Germany, West Germany, The People's Republic of Poland, and the Soviet Union!! :D

This summer the UK we have been getting 2 inch per day, St Swithan's revenge days. The algorithm is carry a photo/gulf umbrella or staying indoors. Stair rods i.e. one up from cats and dogs operate like star trek photon torpedos manoeuvering does not upset their end game logic.

We only got about 1/2 inch on his name day.

Until a recent thread on Canada where I forgot about the Maritimes, I would have guessed I'd do well on that 5th grader show. Now I'm not so sure.

Generally west, but south. The B17`s left England and flew east over Holland and the low countries and on to Germany. That got them over Northern Germany.

Doesn`t surprise me. Kids today don`t know much of anything.

Yep, that's history :)

I overheard, in a restaurant, some (US) college students (4) discussing the location of the country Scandinavia. Of course, now that we have spell-checker, I misspelled three words in the previous sentence.

That's really sad. Was this in California?
