How hard is it to re-lube the focus helical on an Electro?

I gave my GT an outing today but noticed the focusing action feels dry and quite rough.

Is this something that's reasonably easy to get at for a DIY ... I gather the lens has to be removed to get at it.

I haven't taken Electro apart past top cover, though from other similar cameras I judge front panel with lens should be removed (ummm...wiring from body to lens...). Then there's choice - disassemble helicoid or extend it as far as possible, clean old and apply new grease. Latter isn't proper way as old grease can't be cleaned up without full dismantle but it may work.

Considering the number of wires passing through the lens that would have to be de and resoldered to allow enough slack to disassemble the helicals, I personally consider this job to be unfeasible.

The majority of Electro's that have passed over my bench have had focussing similar to what you describe, but I have yet to have one freeze up. My recommendation would be to live with it as best you can . 😀

I have had some luck adding a few drops of machine oil to the helical gears with a needle-type applicator. I add the oil, work the focus a few times, and then set the camera in the sun. The oil softens up the dried grease somewhat, and it can improve the ease and smoothness.

This made me to remember old trick with hair dryer (which I learned here on RFF) - blow warm air on lens barrel slightly warming it up and try to work it in. Overheating should be avoided.
