How lenses are made...

Juan,

Thanks for that, it was interesting. The first comment is right. There's got to be an easier way, surely?

That was interesting. Thanks.
I keep trying to juxtapose an army of Japanese women manipulating abacuses with this process and keep failing.

Not really. This seems to be JML, one of the last US lens makers, and a specialist for custom and small series lens production, so that they have a unusual amount of manual processes. In modern mass production, many of the stages shown there are automatized - but apart from that, they do just about the same.

I was a bit surprised at that mix of lots of machinery and lots of human control... Not easy making lenses... And designing new ones must be tough too!

Cheers,

Juan

I'd love to see this process in the Cosina facility ... partiularly the Zeiss lenses.

Thanks for the link Juan ... that was fascinating.

Thanks for the link. Great video.
Old world craftsmanship with new tech methods.

And to think lenses used to be ground by hand. It's good to see that somethings are still made the old fashioned way.
Hard work with attention to detail. :)

Did you notice the tech using acetone to clean the lens after it was coated?

Could some expert shed a light on how those high power (100X), APO grade microscope objectives were made? I am always intrigued how those tiny elements were polished and assembled?:bang:
