As nice as that would be, given they are fixed lens cameras, I can't help but feel a full frame sensor is not needed. A full frame sensor for interchangeable lens cameras with an existing catalogue of lenses, I can understand though..

I'm not so sure about either Cosina or the need for "a bright line optical finder" (much though I'd personally like the latter). I'd have thought, though, that if an XA-sized camera (or even a u[mju]-sized camera) could be produced for 35mm film technology then sufficiently-advanced digital technology could produce a similarly capable camera of similar size (and for a "full-frame" 35mm sensor as well; u4/3rds lowers the bar here). (Eventually at a similarly low relative price as well, I'd hope.)
While we may not be there yet, with digital technology, I'm happy to believe that it's possible to match the achievements of film.
Beyond that, well, who knows? I'd hate to think we've hit the outer limits of human ingenuity (and don't, for a minute, think we have).

That is what a P&S is for.
Other than that, a camera in a pocket isn't good for anything other than taking photos of lint. I think the M43 and most small DSLR cameras with the right lenses are small enough as they are, no need to go smaller.

This a syrup for my eyes. I better contaminate cameras with a road dust than pocket lint.
Sure, if there are enough vouters for pocketable midsize sensor cameras, manufacturers will move on.

Perhaps what we need are special discreet zippered camera pockets built into our pants for those of us with overly large camera's? 🙂

The Ricoh GRD4 comes closest to this goal as it easily fits in your pocket. Just not an M4/3.

If something like a Panasonic GF5 with the 20/f7 or 14-42/f3.5-5.6 pancakes isn't pocketable enough, I think it's unlikely that you'll see something smaller soon. Large sensors need lenses of a certain size to cover the format.

Take Ricoh, for example, just because you bring up the GR1. Now there is the GXR series with interchangeable sensors and lenses, and the smaller GR-D series, an outstanding compact camera for demanding users. If now you say that there should be a large-sensor compact alternative because you have small pockets and the GR-D IV is somehow not good enough, you have some explaining to do.

got to shoot with a iPhone 4S yesterday and that pretty much replaces all the existing P&S out there. Yeah DOF control would be great. Surely there's an app for that?

I get what you're saying, but it isn't versatile enough and the IQ is not what I'm looking for. Real DOF control and decent dynamic range would be very nice. Many of the small sensor phones and P&S cameras work great under ideal conditions... but not so much in other situations.

I have a Canon S90 that really is not bad for a p+s and hopefully this year we see the Nokia pureview technology also being used on Windows Phone 8. I think it will be a while before we see really pocketable camera's with bigger sensors. Bigger sensor needs bigger lens and that will always be the bottle neck. Just look at how silly those Sony Nex camera's look. Small body, huge lens. The solution will have to come from innovations on the sensor/signal processing side.

I'm not so sure this is a real bottleneck. Look at the Leica X2. The Ricoh GR1 and GR21 was full frame AND had small lenses. Manufacturers figured out how to do it in the film days and they will figure out how to do it in digital.

I already have a zipper on my pants, for my most valued piece of equipment, which it must be noted is "overly large".
Also, this pocket nonsense is a move in the wrong direction. I would suggest a nicely made "shoulder holster" for my smaller camera's.
Furthermore, if you haven't been following the news stories about the "rise against photography", you are probably not aware that we may need to be thinking about "carry permits" for our cameras, while cell phone users walk freely among us.
If I must be issued a "carry permit" for the camera I wield, I'm gonna be packing a "hogleg" instead of a derringer.

Yup! that's a handy camera and my P&S of choice. Try the Snapseed or Mattebox apps. Both apps have some fun toys as well as useful tools.
