4 bags total, 3 Artist & Artisans and 1 other. 2 bags for film camera use and 2 for digital. Also have to f stop backpacks for use when traveling.

I'm looking for a backpack style bag that offers protection and loads from the top. Most backpack for cameras need to be put flat on the ground or are split in the center. Both types have been awkward even dangerous to use, interms of gear tumbling out. Suggestions?

In regular use:
A Tamrac roller-bag, just barely 'legal' for overhead luggage. Sometimes (like right now) used with dividers to carry camera gear, laptop, hard drives etc. but mostly with dividers out as a general-use carry-on bag. It's had a lot of use, and so wear, and is sorely in need of replacement. I'll probably buy one just like it (if I can).
A Lowepro Slingshot, which mostly gets used to hold camera gear in the boot of the car rather than for carrying cameras around, though it's used that way sometimes.
Two Lowepro large 'sliplock' camera pouches used as stand-alone bags (unfortunately, it seems, they're no longer available else I'd buy a couple more). One permanently holds an RF camera (whether M type 240, M3 or Hexar RF) and a few lenses - whatever my current "go to" gear is; while the other carries something else (whatever that is at any given time) - a 5D plus 50mm/f1.2 and 24mm/f2.8 is a common carry, or an OM-4T and a couple of Zuiko lenses, or (all too occasionally) a Rolleicord, or "whatever". These two are my most-used bags.
A Tamrac "snoot" type bag with 50D and 100-400mm zoom plus one other lens (often the 24mm/f2.8, sometimes a 18-55mmIS, sometimes a 35mm/f2).
All but the first have a random-ish collection of microfibre cloths, Lens-Pen lens brushes, spare batteries of multiple types and film or memory cards (sometimes both, sometimes wrongly 😱).
I have 3 other bags that get less use: one carrying a multiple-body Nikon film kit; one suited to carrying two RF cameras plus 4-5 lenses (both from Lowepro) and a small Tamrac bag with a Pentax SLR and two lenses.
I haven't bought a bag in ages, so I guess the above must suit me.

3 bags. A Billingham Hadley small for everyday use. I take this to work and it fits an M3 with a collapsible 50, my wallet and e-reader, 2 rolls of film, my lunch box and some cables / external batteries etc.
I have a Billingham F4.5 which is somewhat larger and I use that on weekends when I also carry a medium format with me.
Then from the old DSLR days I have a Vanguard backpack that I only use to store stuff in these days.

Look at the FStop bags, never had any problems with items tumbling out.

Excellent taste man!! I use the olive colored canvas Finnish mask bag as well.
All those little pockets under the flap are great.
I got a $6 lightly padded drawstring top insert from ebay that nests perfectly.
I'm going to attempt to wax mine.
With prices in the teens to replace it .... seems pretty low risk If I fail 🙂

This what I generally use for Film Leicas. Usually alternate this Domke with an M Classics, CCS or Billingham Hadley Pro shoulder bag. They do a similar job but hang quite differently so its good to change them round every few weeks or so. That way the strain isn't always on same part of the back. If I need more space to carry more bits and pieces, especially if away for a couple of days, its a Billingham Packington. My usual 2x D700's plus couple of zooms, 50mm/1.8, flash, etc. working press kit lives in either a Lowe Pro backpack or CCS shoulder bag.

One, a North Face "Darwin" field bag from '90.
I mostly use just one, a Lowe-Pro Nova 4 (I had to go look), a medium size bag that seems able to manage whatever gear I want to take... Mostly on vacation trips, as otherwise I don't use a bag. And other stuff that's useful to have at hand is usually in it too, like iPad Mini, headphones, airline boarding pass, etc.
Overall I think I have about 5 bags, or 6 if I include the Lowe-Pro Photo-Trekker backpack that came with a used Pentax-67 kit. And a small bag I've never used that was a website promotional item. I expect a lot of us have multiple bags sitting unused.
I recall buying a bag, maybe the Nova 4, at the Tall's Camera outlet in Northgate Mall, Seattle. I wanted something for my then-new Bronica RF645 and had it along to see how it would fit various bags. The salesman fell all over himself in surprise and excitement about the Bronica! And he made the sale...

I have at least ten bags that I use.
For travelling on assignment, Pelican 1600something case. For shooting, the smallest one that can hold the whole gear to be used. The most used are Domke F5XB, ThinkTank SpeedDaemon, ThinkTank Retrospective 10, and Domke F3X.
