I'm actually going a different direction.
Assuming I like the XPRO1, that's what I'll be going to over my D700. These days, I'm pretty much just doing portraiture and a little bit of travel/documentary work. And I don't see why the new Fuji won't handle those needs quite well.
I love the D700. But I'd love to get back to a simpler, lighter kit.

Not upgrading to D800, but supplementing. I really need a second body for my photojournalism work and shooting video is always emphasized, so getting a D800 is a win-win. Will probably still mainly shoot with the D700, keeping a nice manual lens on the D800 for video, but also having the D800/D700 combo for simultaneous wide zoom/tele zoom use.

edit - Also, my hand may be finally forced to integrate some ZF and Zeiss Contax glass into my system with the coming of this new camera...

I am as curious as the next curious person but I will sit this one out. I don't think I have the energy to face more batteries and chargers at the moment. The D700/D300 combination with shared power and MB-D10 is working very well for me. But the next one will no doubt be irresistible.

Ain't that the truth. That is exactly why I lust bought a used D300 and to pair with my tele lenses. yea the next one might be irresistible.

D800 looks fantastic. I bought a D700 when they came out, and I think it was the same price as the D800 is. But the 700 proved too big/heavy for me, I much preferred the D300 that I had previously. So, no, a D800 is not in the cards for me. Maybe an F6. 🙂

Keith, It was quite a stretch for me to pay what I paid for the D700 Jan 0f 2011. I am completely content with it and I see that contentment lasting for 5 or 6 years. I'm not the type that has to have the latest thing down the road. Besides the D700 is a fantastic camera in all respects IMO.

That's not one definite yes! Let me be the first then. I'll get one as soon as I've read the D800 vs D800E reviews. My D700 is a great camera, but I always wanted more pixels for big sharp landscape prints. My D700 files with adjustment layers etc often go into the 100's of MB anyway, so my Mac will cope with the D800 files I reckon. Looking forward to the 100% finder and all that lovely detail. I guess I'm on the wrong forum.

DXO Mark gives it almost 14 and a half stops of DR at base ISO. Narrows to only improving on the D700 by ~.5-.75 of a stop by 3200 and 6400. (I know, it's DXO and I don't care about most of their numbers - but the DR test makes real-world sense to me when I can compare it to a camera I know.)

Starting to wonder if we'll ever see digital sensors with 12+ stops of DR at 3200 and 6400.

If I was a serious landscape photographer I would have a D800 on order right now.

No, you are not in the wrong place. Your reasons to move to a D800 are just as valid as the reasons given for not making the move. Everyone has to make his own mind up as to if it is worth it for them and their usages. I agree that the phobia of more MPs is not a reason to not get a D800. My old PC did not gag at opening a 110 mb file from a dedicated film scanner so the 40-50 mb Raw files from a D800 won't strain my new PC. I just think that excuse does not hold water.

^^ what bob said. I use RF's all the time, but when i need to go and shoot in low light conditions, concerts, weddings, etc... i bring the d700. I dont shoot enough landscape to justify the upgrade, nor video for that matter.

If i didnt have a d700, and i was deciding right now between the d800 and d700, id still do the d700. Just different needs for different folks

I didn't vote b/c I have the D3, not the D700, but it is the same chip so I feel like I can chime in. I am just blown away by what I have seen of the D800, but I feel like the D3 is absolutely perfect for what I do. In fact, I might be more tempted to get a D700 as this round of upgrades creates "cast-offs" rather than go to a D800 at the moment. The quality of the D800 is superb, but the incremental difference in quality for what I do just isn't likely to be noticeable. I might, though, upgrade from the M8/NEX5 to the X1 Pro, depending on what the adapted-M-adopters say. I do have a track record of holding on to cameras "too long" from a trade in value perspective. Just sold an F5 for $300. I can hardly believe it. Wisner 5x7 anyone?

Exactly my dilemma.

Tom

I used to have a D200...tried the d300 and currently own the D700. Let's just say the D700 was a very large jump from the d200, for many obvious reasons (FF and ISO to name just a few).

I totally understand the "enough is enough" mentality, because that is where i am at right now with the d700. There isn't anything this camera can't do, it's always my limitations. I have not outgrown this camera, and do not see that happening

I think there still might be a genuine D700 replacement (mini D4 - as the D700 was to the D3) in about a years time. My D700 is doing great for now, and I'm in no rush to part with it, so will see what happens next year. Or the year after.

When you have mastered your current camera(s). It is obvious that I will die before I master the M3 or the the IIIF, let alone a D800.

My point exactly. With the cost of theses cameras being what they are, I need to feel that the image quality (speaking of technical quality, not content) will see an improvement worth that extra cost. It is my belief that I will SEE this more readily by putting money into glass, rather than the box the glass is attached to (though this is less true with digital).

I am perfectly happy with the images the D200 is capable of producing. With that said, I see the primary advantages, for my photography, that making a move to a D800 would be: 1) full frame (being able to go wide) & 2) low light, low noise, even with that I could still buy a used D700 & put the difference in cost towards glass. After all, someone has to buy those perfectly outstanding, discarded D700's that are being dumped on the market. 😀

I have no plans currently ... but I am curious as to how many owners of the exceptionally fine D700 are thinking of upgrading to the D800.

And for what reasons?

I am purchasing a D800. Sold my D700 on eBay this past week and have a D800 on order.

First and foremost, I am upgrading for better low light performance, i.e., lower image noise at high ISO settings. Secondarily, I'm upgrading for the added resolution. I do not need the resolution for color photography. However, I am primarily a B&W photographer and the additional resolution will be helpful for capturing texture for B&W conversions.

I dont use a nikon myself but I personally think that the d800 is a serious upgrade that any d700 user should consider..

D700's long life little restored my confidence to digital cameras (got burned earlier with D200), perhaps they are mature enough and worth the money as new camera. even for hobbyists.
