I am thinking that with 6 Billion photos, they are doing fine without mine. And my website, with just over 100 photos grouped by series, is doing fine without them.

flickr is huge, but there are many communities of shared interests there which make it more manageable. My contacts include photographers who aren't members here and whose work I follow. I also like following the photos they've tagged as "favorites."

I'm a member of too many groups, but the groups do help in picking out photographers wirh some sort of common ground, be it technique, choice of camera, film, technology, or choice of subject material. Its helped me find a few talented people I have added to my contacts. And now and then some find me too. Flickr may not be ideal, but its not bad either.

As to if the number of contacts matter? No, not really. I use the view new material from contacts function to follow up on photographers I like, as such more is better than less. But at some point the number will become unmanageable. I'm not there yet.

152, although I always thought 'contact' is the wrong name for it. It's more like a bookmark on somebody's flickr stream if I like what they're doing. Sometime I'll delete people from my contact list if their work starts to bore me. Same with my flickr favourites. Sometimes I go back to page one and un-favourite every picture that I don't like anymore. It's funny to see how my taste has changed in the past few years.
