Wondering how much is a Leica II 4 digit (factory upgraded from a Leica I) worth in general. Said it's in good condition.

I found it surprising that despite not many Leica I left without upgrading to II according to some publication, I found more sale records for Leica I than the upgraded version.

Thanks.

Having had and sold one myself (s/no. 4***), I suggest that the value would be around 25% above the value of a II in similar condition. This assumes it has with it the original Elmar (now converted).

I currently enjoy another (s/no. 9***) with its' original converted lens.

If the s/no is a 1*** or a 2***, it may be worth more.

I'm sure there are those who hold other opinions.

David

ps: Allow in the price for an overhaul if you want it for use. It may be in "good condition", but is that the body, the works, or what?

I agree with David.

Conversions are generally worth roughly the same or slightly less than a 'normal' camera. A nice serial number might increase the value 20-30% but the market is small and many dealers do not put a premium on a conversion unless it is very special.

In this case I might suggest that a very late conversion without flash might be a rarer (and hence possibly more valuable) thing than a pre war conversion. Who knows...actual value is all down to condition and detail and there is little point in further speculation without seeing pictures of the beast!

I would pay more for a Leica II conversion, if:

-the camera is black
-the camera has no synch
-the camera has no cover plate on the spot of the slow-speed dial
-the camera has an old style logo filled with white paint

The serial number has no importance to me.

Erik, I'd suggest we might end up in a bidding was for one of those!

in my experience its worth what any other Leica II is worth. Very few are willing to pay a premium for an "upgraded" Leica camera - in most instances the upgrade reduces value.

Not sure what your source is. I see about 10x or more Leica I's than I see upgraded Leica I's.

Erik,

Thanks, in your shopping list you forgot to mention the larger speed dial....

Last summer I did talk to Peter in Vienna about selling the 'set' of postwar conversions as a single lot at auction. It has taken a while to assemble them. In the end I decided I didn't need the money and also doubted they would fetch a premium.

I also have a black rim Summar that is either very slightly coated or has gone blue as they do sometimes, difficult to work out which.

And...for those who have money to burn, there is a quite worn rigid Summar on Ebay UK right now.

Thank you all, I think I got the idea.

Stephen, let me try to find the source, it's from something I read recently, but I think what you said make more sense. But now I have a second question, if the upgraded one is less common, why the price is usually lower than the un-ungraded ones? Since this is a factory modification, not by user, should really diminish the value.
