How much gear for a week in Iran?

My typical travel gear:

- 1 RF body + 1 (or 2 at most) lens(es), loaded with ASA 400 B&W film
- 1 digital P&S - as backup and for all color needs

I doubt many would like this idea but for snaps that won't need a large print, a Minolta 16 II or two with a few orignal cassettes would do for a go everywhere camera kit.

Before you go, measure, cut and roll your favorite films to 16 mm x 19 inches, taping each potentional reload roll and store them in 35mm film or bulk film canisters marked in appropriate languages as to contents and handling. Keep an example of rolled film out so you can show security what their dealing with.

As you cycle through your loaded cassettes, find a space that can be made light tight and unload/reload the cassettes as needed, keeping the exposed films in their own light tight cans or better yet, have them developed locally by a lab that does/did 110 stuff.

Visit The Sub Club http://www.subclub.org/darkroom/darkroom.htm for how-to info to see how doable this is and more info in general.

One more thing, by taking a small 35 mm to 16 mm film slicer (available from eBay) and buying and having your film developed locally, you can avoid some the hassles of airport security handling your undeveloped film. If 16 mm movie film can be found locally that is also an option.

By-the-way, anyone out there with surplus Minolta 16 cassettes or (I or II) lenses that want to pass them on, feel free to direct them my way;-) I love this stuff.

Cheers

Hmmm...

No focusing without the lenses; tiny negs; f/2.8 lenses; limited shutter speeds; no tripod socket (without the adapter)...

No, thanks. I bought my first 16-II new in the PX in '67 for $28, and I still have one somewhere; but I'm afraid I can't really regard it as a serious camera. Fun, yes. Travel, no.

Cheers,

Well Roger, like I said, this won't be everyones choice or even the 'best one', given todays wide selection of gear, but speaking from personal experience, I don't look at the Minolta 16 II and see limitations, rather I enjoy seeing what I can do with it and have fun.

Of course I always have a 'regular' camera with me, even if it's only a Oly XA2 or RC, but the Minolta can give great results. If I see a scene that calls for 'bigger and better' I'll use that, but for casual stuff, the M16 is always an option that's easy on the pocket, both to carry and afford.

Cheers

Thanks! That tea house was awesome. I was standing in the mixed sex section shooting towards the men only section (larger version here). The shot was taken with a Nikkor 24mm f2.8 on a Nikon FM3A (oops, an SLR), and the film was Provia 400X (love that film!).

thanks for following up! great shot, even better in high res. I thought it looked like a 24/25mm lens, but didn't want to say out loud :) and yeah I love 400X too!

Last time I was in Iran i used a Leicaflex SL2 with 28, 50 and 90mm. I only used Fuji Provia 400.
