Diving into my first M6 package (used) however it has been quite challenging getting a handle on used prices and what is a fair deal or not. I?m a shooter not a collector so ?mint? not so important but obviously I don?t want any thing trashed and like to have boxes?.....well?......just because.
Have settled on the following items for starters?.any suggestions on what I can expect to pay (understanding of course the discrepancy between used retail and private party)
M6 TTL .72 Chrome, ?Con F2/50mm latest & F2/90mm Latest (non ASPH)
As a side note, I have not been successful in finding these items at any of the local resellers (LA) and am considering eBay (cautiously) but tough to bid with out pricing references.
Thoughts much appreciated.
Cheers,
Jay

Skip the boxes and save hundres of dollars. They won't help you make better photos anyway.
In LA, I'd think the following three places would carry the M6;
- Kimura Photomart on east 2nd street,
- Bel-Air Camera on Kinross Ave,
- Samy's Camera on South Fairfax Ave
I know Samy's have the body you're looking for at: http://www.samys.com/product.php?ItemNo=LEIC10434&PHPSESSID=36ec38f823afd53e25e075511e635ead

Check the EBay "ended" listings for going rates.emember that these days many good (and not so good) camera shops sell their used items on EBay. The ended auctions from reputable (High Feedback) is your indicator of the market. Midwest Photo Exchange tends to run less than the average and have the benefit of dealing with a camera store directly.
I think you are looking at about $2,500-$3,000 for a setup as you want. The Latest Leica lenses run a premium.
My M3+50mm Summicron type I rigid+ 90mm F4 Elmar ran $1,200 including having the finder rebuilt and lens cleaned. It is the perfect user, all in about 8.5/10 condition. As you have not added a wide-angle to your line-up, you may consider a used M3. The 90mm finder lines are terrific in it. The 135 lines are very-well usable, and a 35mm F2.8 Summaron with Eyes in M- condition set me back under $400.

I can't see you walking away with that outfit for less than $3000 from a reputable dealer - & at that price it would be a steal. You'd be paying $5500 - $6000 new so . . . go from there. You might get lucky on ebay, or try www.photo.net, where members of the Leica forum regularly put their gear up for sale. KEH, georgeury.com, classicconnection.com, Tamarkin, & PhotoVillage are all reputable dealers who will work with you via internet or telephone. Jim Keuhl has monthly ads in Shutterbug & is also good to deal with. B&H, Adorama, etc. Good luck.
You will save hundreds by buying out-of-state. Shipping will not come close to those high

My M5s need red dots!
jleev, when it comes to Leicas of this kind, the offerings aren't small. Be careful when you look for them as there are two kinds: the M6 and the more recent, slightly more expensive M6TTL. Usually, Rich Pinto sells M6 for around $1000-$1200, and M6TTL for $1200-$1400. As for glass, I'd contact places like Koh's Cameras, where they offer Leica glass at very reasonable prices.
If you're set on a not so new 'cron as you are in getting a camera with boxes, expect to pay more. Contact Richard Oesterling in KBCamera. I got my brand new 'cron from Richard; he's a very reliable seller, like Rich Pinto, and both are constantly praised by all Leica users.
Last but not least: call or e-mail Don Chatterton after checking his website. I got my M6TTL from him, but his sales depend on what he has in store. In sum, expect to pay something around $1200 for a camera in good shape (with box, case and the like; I won't criticize you as I looked for a camera with all those frills), and around $700 for a nice 'cron 50/2.
Have some fun shopping!

You can but brand new from accphoto at a great discount! That is who I purchase my gear from. Whatever price they have on the web site you can get even cheaper.

The box will add several hundred dollars to the price. If money is no object, then just factor that in when you buy.
The prices being quoted here are accurate: at least $1,200 for the body but possibly more. At least $700 for the f/2.0 Summicron 50 and possibly more.
I was lucky enough to buy mine from a shopkeeper looking to jump to the M7 and got the camera + lens for $1,300. No papers, no manual (bought that later). Picked up a half-case for about $60. Very nice camera.

Thought that boxes would be a good investment for re-sale.

Re: Leica Boxes??
Leica prices has been falling lately - just as most other film-based camera outfits.
I doubt that you will be able to recoup the premium you're paying TODAY for those boxes if you should turn around and sell this in a few years.
Just one person's opinion though.

The truth about boxes is... what's written above. I've seen M6TTL's running at only one grand, boxless, caseless and manual-less. And also it's easy to find camera-less boxes going for big money (just check KEH if you don't believe me).
When I got my Leicas, I didn't know they were being sold with their boxes and papers. In fact, I didn't even know some people would even keep them! Oh, well, I learn something every day.

Boxes.....
Boxes.....
Well right now I would simply settle for finding the right camera let alone boxes. After all I am a shooter not a collecter so boxes not a sticking point however a bonus.
Cheers,
J
