Because an RF misalignment is at best uncomfortable and at worst generates focussing inaccuracy.never got to calibrate the rangefinder. As long as the focusing is accurate, why do we bother to adjust it?

Agree.
And the R-D1 is easy enough for me, a layman, to cal it within 20min after the first trial.

My RF looks like this:
It's just not straight, but focusing is sharp. Is this in need of a vertical or horizontal alignment?

Bought 'hardly used', was very slightly off vertically but significantly off horizontally. Had it adjusted with a 50/1,5 Nokton, then perfect. Now off again in both planes, don't remember knocking it. This time I'll do it myself as Cutler has so thoughtfully laid out the procedure. Courage lads it ain't rocket science.

Are you sure it is the RF patch and not the framelines that are tilted in the viewfinder? In the latter case, the tilt doesn't alter focussing accuracy AFAIK....It's just not straight, but focusing is sharp. Is this in need of a vertical or horizontal alignment?

Good point about the slanted patch being due to frameline error or VF error....... does anyone know: if the RF patch is horizontally accurate but vertically off, does this mean the focussing is off?
And vice-versa, if the RF patch is vertically accurrate but horizontally inaccurate, does this mean the focussin is not accurate?

Horizontal misalignment generates more focussing inaccuracy than vertical one generally but the latter is uncomfortable at best so better adjust it as far as possible. Vertical misalignment is not complicated to adjust through the hot shoe with the R-D1. Can be more dificult with the R-D1s, some copies of it having got alignment screws glued by Epson.
