I tried this on a tram ride.

Is it like most other digital P&S -the shutter noise can be turned on or off ?, I see it suffers the usual problem of totally blown-out highlights.

Most P&S today come with the electronic fake shutter noise off by default, and so all you can hear is something like a leaf shutter flicker. Also it seems like the high contrast is mostly (intentionally) due to post processing.

Yes the highlights are supposed to be blown out, although I know what you are talking about. I'm only using Lightroom, so it's pretty hard to work with the highlights.
I have thought about using the Sigma's software, but why bother since I'm always going for the high contrast look anyway.
