How smooth should the focusing ring be on a summicron 50/2 collapsable?

How smooth should the focusing ring be on a summicron 50/2 collapsable?

I have to use a little bit of force in order to turn it, although it's useable. Is it supposed to be smooth as an elmar 50.3.5? Thanks 😀

Some Elmars don't move at all. 🙂

These are 50-60 year old lenses, some will have ancient grease, some will be recently serviced.

They should all be smooth after servicing unless the helical threads have been damaged with grit.

True~ but my elmar's focusing ring is very smooth! Well I guess I won't ask someone to re-lube it since it's still useable

Professionally serviced helicals that are otherwise undamaged (i.e., all the ancient dried grease completely removed, and replaced with modern equivalent) should be smooth.

My Don Goldberg serviced Summicron collapsible is as smooth as any of my other Leica lenses. Don will offer you a choice of viscosity, depending on how much dampening you want. He once relubed a lens for me so that was super smooth, but it also required more force than I was expecting to turn it. He relubed it for me with something with less resistance, so now it is perfect.

Mine is very smooth with a level of damping that I like - not too light and not too firm. The amount of pressure needed to turn it remains constant throughout the focusing range.
