I guess I can still get filters, but what about cyan fringing with uncoded lenses? Maybe I should consider this a closed system and stick with the R-d1 and film?

I just can't see that the Leica glass is that much better (if at all) in examples I've seen...

One of the attractions of the M8 is how much better it handles those tiny symmetrical VC lenses than the RD1. I'm talking about the inexpensive , 15,21,25 & 28mm that are of symmetrical design and although not very fast, are quite sharp and more rectalinear than the more expensive Leica and zeiss designs. On the RD1 they suffer from some pretty strong vignetting, but the offset microlensing on the M8 seems to tame this problem.

I am really juiced about using these lenses on the M8. Even if the weren't such a value, there performance on the M8 is very good, maybe better than on film cameras.

I was impressed on how well the M8 took to the VC 12mm lens that I used for a half a dozen or so exposures awhile back. No vignetting that I could detect.

You might be nearly as stupid as me- I just purchased a chrome M8 today and I too have a fair amount of CV lenses. So you’re probably not quite that stupid 😉

My advise? read the last five threads on this board, from start to finish. You’ll have an accurate understanding regarding the true face of stupidity and you’ll know on what side of the fence you stand. After that it should be easy to decide what’s stupid, and what’s not.

Lenses that are referred to as being rectilnear are lens that, we would commonly say, don't suffer from distortion. The most common form is barral or pincushion distortion. Rectilinear lens design is particularly desirable for architectial use .
The cheap VC wide angle lenses, for the most part, surpass lenses costing 19 times as much in this regard 😎

I love the pancake lenses on the M8; I have the CV 15, CV 21, CV 28/3.5, and I'd put my CV 40/1.4 in this category as well. They work really quite well. Here's the 28/3.5:

Digital is young, all digital cameras have 'issues' and Leica had to get a camera out before it simply faded away and died. But I don't suppose they would release something that's not up to the job either.

Some people like to take test shots, others like to take pictures. Some love their gear and take pictures of it, and shove the camera in a display cabinet. Others use it.

I wouldn't mind one, but it's a little too expensive for my taste. I'll stick with my Bessa and 5D.

Information is power. Get on the Leica User's Group (LUG) site and see the many past comments from users, then sign up to get their daily email postings on the M8, etc.
My take is too many flaws in digital today, but technology is bound to improve someday, so I'll wait to buy an expensive digital RF of any kind.

Thanks all - I will continue to research it. It looks like using CV lens is a reasonable plan (though I am sure I would eventually be lured to try some Leica lenses).

The only way we're being stupid is to buy the M8 (I did) and expect NOT to have any problems.

The bleeding edge of technology always has bumps along the way.

I hope my M8 gets back from its mandatory trip back to Germany for a re-fit before we get too deep into January

Just about everything depreciates eventually but the M8 may not -- especially if (as I predict) we never see an M9. As such it may actually become a collector's item.

But, Mike, I make you a promise. If anyone ever gives me an M8, I will give it to you immediately -- I don't want an M8 even if it is FREE... 😉

Otherwise start saving your pennies...

That sounds very interesting, I am thinking to buy a CV12 for my M8, is there anywhere I can find the images you took uaing the M8 and CV12?
