How to build a lens shade for Jupiter-8 ?

I bought a circular one directly made for the jupi-8 from alex-photo. Written jupiter-8 42x45^o on it (i guess that's 45 degrees angle of view). Cost me 4 $ i think (plus shipping shared w other items).

It's 3.7 cm deep incl. the 0.5 cm edge that slips on the lens, that's a bit more than greyhoundman's example, probably he has a different one. And it's about 6.5 cm in diameter (on the far side of course). It's a straight cone otherwise.

I´m using a Leica type Hoya of 40,5 mm thread dia. for my Kiev4/Jupiter 8. Dimensions are depth 25 mm measured from lens ring and aprox. 65 mm ext. diameter. Its mounted over a UV filter and never experienced flare with that combination. Pehaps it´s easy to find one as they were very popular as they fit old Voigtländer RFs and Minolta A5 cameras among other of the mid sixties. The goodies: it has three rounded slots in the back of the shade so allowing almost unobstructed the viewfinder.

I bought a couple from heavstar, they're great, look for american-eagle too, who has what looks like the same ones slightly cheaper...

Once tried Mamiya hood from old C330 80mm f2.8 lens. 42 slip on, fits but vignettes a little if not sited accordingly (and it never so with J8 - front element rotates when focusing, you know). Still use it till better solution is found - better image that shows moderate signs of vignetting than image killed with flare.

There are some truly Russian Camera freaks on BestStuff.com. One of them has recovered and repainted just about every Russian camera he's touched. He made an effective lens hood from a plastic bottle, like a bleach bottle or something like that. He painted it flat black and it looks like it would work well. Jim Blazik, or something like that, and he has it on his website. Basically, take the bottle, cut the opening off when it will slip on the lens and then cut the bottle off where it will block the sun. It is difficult to describe but look at his website.

I made a lens hood from an Ilford plastic film canister for my TLR. It was weird looking, but functional. The lens cap was the original cap for the canister.
I made a lens cap for my former sonnar 50/1.5 from an Adidas anti-perspirant spray cap. Fitted perfectly, after i cut the thickened edge off. My friends had a great time when they have seen it.

If one looks around in the house, lots of good things to recycle🙂

I guess we are limited to what we see and how to use it. I wouldn't have thought a film cannister would work or part of a bottle, but I have been proven wrong.
