Hello everybody!
I'm new to analog photography, especially with a full manual Voigtlander R3M like mine.
I'm curious about double exposure, how can this be made with R3M?
I know there is a method where one can expose an entire film, an roll it again to double exposure, but I wanted to know if there is a possibility of double expose only one frame from the film. Can I do that?
Thanks for the help.

Have a nice day

Just sacrificed a frame on my R3A to test something, but I fear the answer to your question is "No". I tried depressing the rewind button on the base of the camera after exposing one frame, but, of course, as soon as you use the lever wind to cock the shutter for the next frame the button pops out and the film advances also.

I just tried it with my R4A (my R3A has no film in it right now), and I think it worked:

- take the first picture
- tension the film with the rewind knob
- KEEP the rewind button pressed in and cock the shutter with the advance lever. I keep the rewind button pushed in with my left pink and at the same time hold my left tumb on the rewind knob while "advancing" the advance lever to cock the shutter.

Of course, I can only really check it when the film will be developed, but I just tried this to be sure, and the rewind knob didn't turn as it usually does when advancing film in the normal way.

Thanks Leigh and Stefan.
I've tried the same way as Stefan said, but I didn't tension the film. After I've exposed a frame, I've pushed the rewind button and cock the shutter. I've noticed that the film rewind button did not turned ( to reload the next frame ) but in the frame indicator it moved forward to the next frame. I'll see what will happen when I'll develop the film.
Thanks.

Sounds good to me 🙂 : the frame counter advances even when you cock the shutter when there's no film in the camera.

I just tried this with my R3A (without film in it): open the back, put your thumb on both the film sprockets (the one with teeth and the one that the film gets winded up on; don't know the correct names in English) and push the rewind button at the bottom.
You can then cock the shutter while holding the film sprockets, and that's what should happen, but to eliminate as much as possible all movement of the film, I think you have to tension the film first and hold the rewind button while cocking the shutter.

Stefan, if you will be the first of us to develop that film where you double exposed a frame, please let me know the result. I'm kinda have 26 more frames left from where I've double exposed . So if you develop the film, let me know the result. If I will expose the entire film probably this week-end and develop it. I'll let you know my result.
Thanks!

Ok, willdo 🙂

Well, the film is developed, and it didn't work out as I hoped it would: the images are not exactly superimposed, but have shifted, usually about 1/4th of the total length of the frame.

I'm going to give this another try with the next film; I think it must be possible by really tensioning the film before the first picture and tighten it again in the same way before the second picture.

Stefan.

If you're 'lucky' like me with my old R3A, it'll double expose your negative on its own 😉

Not that I wanted it to happen..
