I used to know this, and now I don't. I haven't has any success embedding images (even from RFF) into forum discussions. I click the "insert images" icon, paste the URL of the image into the popup window, but the picture doesn't appear — only the insert brackets and the URL address.

You have to paste the correct URL. On a windows machine open the image, then right click on it. Choose Properties, and copy the URL from the box that pops up. On a Mac right click on the open image and choose Copy Image Address.
