Tom's got some good points for the forum and for life in general.
Once, as a Peace Legion volunteer, I got strong-armed (literally) by a drunk Visigothic air force pilot (off-duty, I hope) who wanted to beat the crud out of me because Roman bombers were crossing Visigoth airspace to bomb the Scythians, who were accused of genocide against the Dacians. I tried to explain to him the nuances of democracy and regime but basically I just...ran away and hid in the bathroom. And that was under a Roman emperor I actually voted for...
I think it's too bad that Romans have such a difficult time discussing politics, not politely per se (the Etruscans don't even try to do that and they are famously political) but impersonally. Political disagreements shouldn't lead to ad hominum attacks or hurt feelings. And they do have a place on forums like RFF. It is a forum and the forum is a community meeting place where all sorts of conversation can and should take place. I'm an amatuer astronomer and we talk about all sorst of stuff, and sometimes we argue a bit, and not just about eyepiece brands. It's all good.
What I'm saying is (us Romans tend to orate overly) is that:
1. politics has a place, and
2. it should be discussed with restraint, respect and, yes, even love
(All nationalities have been thinly disquised to avoid offending living civilizations....all likenesses are purely coincidental).
Well - I was in Dacia (I mean Romania) recently and I can report that they are very very proud of "their" King, Trajan, who brought law, order and democracy to them from Rome.

Still in joke mode
Legend has it that a Roman General (possibly called George WB?) said that he could take Ireland with a single legion. I'd like to have seen him try!
A Scottish King, speaking of Roman activities in his country famously said:
"They made a desert and called it peace".
For speaking truth and general perceptiveness: Romans - 0 Scots - 1, I think.
Apologies to Romans or Ancient Scots who saw things differently but didn't vote or found themselves on the wrong end of the argument!

You are so right. Half the fun of flyfishing is looking down at the bass fisherman. I'm kidding !!!
Hmmm, if there's anything funnier than spending a couple of thousand bucks on fly-fishing tackle to catch fish you have no intention of eating, then it's spending ten times that sum on a bass-boat with a 200hp motor to catch fish...
..that you have no intention of eating.
Let's face it. The human race is pretty amusing.

I always had a feeling that the British Empire was the "new" Roman Empire.
they just moved the Empire capital to London from Rome.

Quite.

If you want to EAT some fish, I bet this works better than any carbon-fiber fly rod.

The news column at the time claims the Dacians had problems with the Trajan horse!

Any fool can lob bait into a hole and catch a fish, but it takes some degree of skill to get an easily spooked brown trout to hit a dry fly.

We don't get those here. I haven't looked into it, but it may be for the same reasons we can't establish self-sustaining populations of Atlantic Salmon - the southern hemisphere thing messes with their sense of direction, so they can't find their way home to spawn. We do get sea-run brown trout, though.Flyfisher Tom said:Mike,

That's interesting, I never thought about it before. In Patagonia (Chile/Argentina), it is also sea-run browns. Maybe it really is a southern hemisphere thing.

You know, I thought about being offended about that libelous slag
Then I realized that yes, I've been to a few wedding receptions where barbecue was served, and one where grits were available.
